Spam: Email Inspired Poems

By Ben Myers
Published by Blackheath Books

Already known around these parts as a journalist, label owner (of the recently closed Captains Of Industry) and novelist, Spam: Email Inspired Poems is Ben Myers’ debut poetry collection.

Saving rather than discarding those insane spam e-mails that we’ve all been the recipients of, Myers has ‘remixed‘ the words within the many unwanted mails advertising viagra, sex toys, Russian brides and Nigerian bank accounts to create a new poetic form. Actually, spam poetry has been around online for nearly ten years now, but this is the first known printed collection.

The results are both poignant and poetic, unnerving and evocative. Comparisons of this surreal collection are hard to draw upon, but there are certain similarities to the ‘cut-up‘ technique of William Burroughs’ writing (also later adopted by David Bowie) and the lyrics of Cedric Bixler-Zavala of At The Drive-In / The Mars Volta, whose self-created lexicon of made-up words and twisted imagery captures the imagination in similar ways.

More than anything though it seems like an utterly modern approach to writing, where modern technology collides with traditional literature and where adverts and previous works are reinvented, re-cycled and twisted into new shapes.

Myers tells us that the book did have the working title of Increase The Size Of Your Penis but was worried that “people might think it was a self-help manual, then ask for a re-fund when their penis remained like a button mushroom.”

Reading it, there is no such confusion. All copies of this limited edition book are hand-made by the publisher and signed and number by the author. You can watch a short film about its creation here.

Or you can buy a copy of Spam: Email Inspired Poems for £5 from here.

Persepolis

(12A)
www.sonypictures.com/classics/persepolis

Persepolis is an animated tale about a typical teenager finding her identity, and learning to deal with the world. In her case, that was the Middle East, but her experiences are universal enough for any Westerner to identify with.

Marjane Satrapi is a survivor and this is her autobiographical story about growing up in Iran during the Islamic revolution of the late 70s. While it sticks to the blunt, monochromatic style of the original graphic novel, the hand-drawn, 2D animations are artistic enough to take it way beyond the usual Hollywood CGI output.

Seen through the eyes of a young Marjane, the political turmoil falls away and a sharp sense of humour and rebellious spirit shine through. To get through the dark times, she turns to music for refuge – and Iron Maiden are a match for her intensity.

With voiceovers by Iggy Pop and Sean Penn, this is a must-see movie, giving you an insider’s view of life in Iran, exploring beyond the stereotypes and propaganda to see the real people underneath. But at the same time, it’ll have you laughing out loud and purring at the sheer beauty of some of the animations, leaving you with a feeling of uplifted indulgence.

Poison The Well – Live

with The Plight
Camden Barfly
11/4/08

Ah, aren’t Barfly tours just the best? The chance to see your heroes in tiny venues, packed in there like a bunch of sweaty sardines…all in the name of some bleedin’ good rock and roll. And talking of good rock and roll, main (and only) support The Plight provide the perfect appetizer to tonight’s headliners. Every song may sound remarkably similar but their Every Time I Die-infused punk-tinged rock and roll is intriguingly fun to watch. Being on Visible Noise Records alongside giants such as Lostprophets and Bring Me The Horizon is clearly doing them no harm so expect to see them on more high-profile support slots as they come.

As good as The Plight were, there is clearly only one band the people are here to see tonight. Having already toured their latest album ‘Versions‘ last year (in support of Gallows) it means that tonight is more of a greatest hits set as opposed to a ‘let’s plug the new album as much as we can‘ set. Which is great news for all concerned, as they play roughly around three to four tracks off of all four of their albums. Poison The Well are the type of band who absolutely soar in venues like this and tonight they live up to this by sounding fan-bloody-tastic. Old hits such as ‘12/23/93‘ are greeted with some serious pit action whilst newer, brooding tracks such as ‘Nagaina‘ provide some thankful respite without losing any energy. Whilst it is obvious everyone is waiting for fan-favourite ‘Nerdy‘ (as is apparent from the mass stage invasion when it does come) tonight Poison The Well show once again how well they can transfer their much-varied albums to the live setting.
