Blindness

www.blindness-themovie.com

Blindness is a dramatic thriller film adaptation of the 1995 novel of the same name by José Saramago.

The film opens with a man in his car on a busy motorway who all of a sudden loses his sight. What begins with the condition of one man seeking help with a sight problem, gradually becomes an epidemic where all those that come into contact with someone with the condition also get infected and loses their sight. The infected are transferred to a secure location which gradually becomes overwhelmingly populated and as you can imagine, things do not end happily with rationing of food becoming a problem and one ward deciding they should have more food than another. There are some shocking images present within this focal point of the film.

One ward holds those that had the first cases of the blindness and with the help of the wife of an ophthalmologist who pretends to be blind to stay with her husband, gradually work together to battle the difficulties and struggles they face. Being the only sighted person in the location she cares for, cleans up after and looks out for others in her surroundings, which with everyone urinating and making a complete mess puts a real strain on her relationship with her husband. Julianne Moore must have had such determination and strength to take on this character. We are left with a few questions though regarding her character. The most significant being why was she never infected with the condition?

The way the film is presented is very much like a two part TV series. It looks in detail at all smaller points rather than just glassing over the non-significant areas like most feature films do to get to the more interesting and focal points. The dinner scene towards the end and the fight for food or bathing for example are looked at in great detail when they could have easily be glanced over or missed out completely and would have no lesser impact. Blindness also focuses more on the relationship inside the holding cells than finding a cure at what caused thousands of people to go blind in the beginning. It focuses on dealing with the problems and struggles created by going blind rather than dealing with finding a solution before it happens. We rarely see anyone attempting to create a cure or even find out what caused it in the beginning.

The only real difficulty I had regarding Blindness was its lack of timescale. Whether all the events take place within a week or two or a few months is unclear and I feel I would have had more appreciation for the film if this information had been unveiled. Other than that Blindness was very insightful and made me realise two things; one, people would do anything to survive and two, you can adapt to any situation that comes your way.

Globe/Devo cruisers

Woke up this morning and these beauties are sat at the end of my bed. Usually a cup of tea is needed to get me amped for any day ahead but the glow of the soft yellow wheels had the same caffiene affect. Within a flash I jumped out of bed, knocked over a full bucket bong, stained the carpet with the dirty water and made my way to the wardrobe. Out sprang a jump suit, and my favourite flower pot hat. I’m ready…I’m ready for anything.

The harsh concrete floor of my street felt as smooth as icing sugar as my shoulders lead the charge. Pump by pump, the wheels of this beast rolls over driveways, the trucks cushion the pressure from my thighs and the smell of petrol from the garage forecourt fills my nasal system and forces a sneer. I whistle ‘Whip It‘ as I four wheel slide underneath a stationary truck delivering crates of food to a local shop and then push as fast as I can, hair streamlined in the wind as the hill in front of my engulfs every last push. Splat. I’m taken out by a passing car. I didn’t see it coming and now my flowerpot is broken and soil spills onto the open road.

I awake in a sweat to find that 2 Globe/Devo cruisers were still at the end of my bed. If you think i’m skating these ever you are some kind of fool.

Go to www.globe.tv for more Devo/Globe madness and look out for these in your local SOS this month. Go on, treat yourself or dream on.

Element Navigator L/S shirt

Here we have a classic example of less is more. This shirt has no special features, just a nice plain and simple check pattern in a classic cut that will fit any averagely built man.

Element really have been making an effort to keep their clothing ranges solid and diverse and this shirt shows the simple side of their vision. The shirt is lightweight and very pleasing to the eye, they’ve not tried to come up with this year’s new purple, they simply made a shirt for everyday use.

Another good one to have in you’re summer cupboard, it’s good for rocking and rolling, both boxes ticked!

Vans TNT 4

Tony Trujillo is one of the better skateboarders of modern times and his vision in this era of progression and outdoing others, is focused on pure aesthetics and straight up functionality. This is very well portrayed in the design of his 4th pro model on Paul Van Dorren’s shoe company of 1966, Vans.

The shoe has no exciting features, it can’t make you a cup of tea and won’t fetch the newspaper for you on a Saturday morning, but it will hold you hella tight when you’re hitting up a frontside standup around a bowled corner with waxed to fuck pool coping!

They’re simple shoes with a big heart, not bulky at all, but sturdy enough to get really street on it’s sole. The uppers consists of suede and canvas, while the waffle treads are wrapped in vulc, what more can a man ask for in a shoe?! They have got triple stitching on the toe cap, which obviously good, because this means you’ll be kicking in these for months and months to come.

I really like these and think of them to be of similar nature to the TNT 2’s, which I think was one of the best shoes I’ve ever skated. It’s not a fat shoe, but it’s not quite as slim as the Old Skools either, they’re great for everyday use and genuinely work well for the skateboarding thing you’re all obsessed about. Good board feel, but strong enough for flips and lips.

I will honestly say this, if I had these when trying to get a better shot of a back smith on bowl with no flat bottom and a 6ft deep pool coping, I wouldn’t be struggling with a semi smashed knee cap right now and would be out there grinding trees, cars and horses!

You know these are good, don’t um and ah the decision, if it’s practical you’re after with style in mind, get these, they’re perfect for all sorts of skateboarding.
