SMA Hobo Tour demo 1989

Back in 1989, team demo’s were sometimes this simple. It’s a fact that all you needed for a good time was a rail, a jump ramp and curb. This Santa Monica Airlines tour features one such demo in Virginia with Mike Vallely, Jason Lee, and Jesse Martinez who utilise the most basic of challenges in style for stoked audience.

Get stoked on this SMA Hobo Tour footage filmed by Fred Fraley, whose son was a keen skater, so he filmed all of the demo’s that came through town. Lucky boy.

Sebadoh announce new album ‘Defend Yourself’

sebadoh_secretEP If you were switched on this week and a Sebadoh fan, you would have noticed that their awesome ‘Secret’ EP that they dropped a while back suddenly became available to stream on Spotify. There’s a reason for this after all, as the wonderful trio have announced their first album in 14 years titled ‘Defend Yourself‘. Lou Barlow says, “We did Defend Yourself the only way it could have been done, on the cheap, and outside of the mixing of my 6 songs with longtime collaborator Wally Gagel, all by ourselves.”

The ‘Secret’ EP will be available on 10-inch black vinyl and 10-inch green marble vinyl through their OG label Domino Records this month and the album released on September 16th. This band have always been the real deal, never released any crap records and are back with a bang. Hyped is what Crossfire staff are today we tell ye. Get on it.

Hevy Fest moves to Brixton Academy

Hevy Fest line up - BrixtonHevy Fest will not be taking place at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park this summer. Read this new statement issued today:

“Hevy was set to move venue this year and we found the perfect site! It gave us much more room, a more central location, more generous operating hours and it allowed us to drop the dreaded no re-entry rule. It was perfect! We were all lined up to announce our now home, when a well-hidden licensing condition was discovered that would need to be overruled for the site to host Hevy.

Unfortunately the appeal process would take 2 months and we didn’t want to risk a last-minute cancellation if things went sour. So, rather than pursue an alternative and keep you guys hanging even longer, we’ve decided to shelve the camping set-up until 2014 – and instead put on a load of events with the bands already booked, including a new breed of Hevy Fest at Brixton Academy.

Current ticket holders will be offered a refund.

We are currently working on more events to be announced as soon as possible. Hevy would like to thank all the bands, agents and venues for their help in making these shows possible.”

Hayes Skatepark – new photos

The new skatepark designed by Wheelscape in Hayes, situated in the London Borough of Hillingdon, looks like it will be finished by the end of this week, making way for the local council to inspect it before opening to the public this summer.

The actual build has been done by Blakedown whose history of finishing concrete skateparks is not up there with the likes of the best of them, so time will tell if the new 750m sq park based at Hayes Hawks on Lake Farm Country Park, Dawley Road will be a winner. Here’s hoping they have done a great job.

It looks pretty good from these new photos that have been tweeted this morning (via Uncle Buck) and shared on their user group page.

Radkey

Radkey
‘Cat & Mouse EP’
Wreckroom Records

radkey_catandmouse_EPKansas City may not have the hardcore history that the likes of LA, Boston or Washington has in its historical locker, but there’s no reason for that to change in the future aided by the sudden emergence of Radkey. This trio of brothers are set for their first UK live shows this month and take us back into 80s punk rock territory with a sound reminiscent of classic veterans, the Misfits, DOA and the Supersuckers, with a blend of thrashing guitars and upbeat rhythms. It’s rare to see a new band go deep back into that territory these days, the most recent example being Cerebral Ballzy, but these Missouri punks have taken the bull by the horns and said fuck it, that’s what we like, and that’s how we roll.

Fronted by Dee Radke, (who on first sight reminded me of NY skater Harold Hunter, RIP) this band caught attention of many at this years SXSW festival in Texas and are set to release their debut EP “Cat & Mouse” that’s made up of 4 solid punk numbers.

Cat & Mouse‘ kicks it off with Dee’s deeply gratifying vocals, pushing a more rockier approach, with sing-a-long Glenn Danzigms that stick in your head for days, followed by the rampant punk frenzy ‘Out Here in My Head‘. The sing-a-long continues in the catchy and direct, ‘Pretty Things’, until the darker, up-tempo ‘Red Letter’, a tale ‘about a personal vendetta’ with an ex lover, ends to make way for the chugging steez of N.I.G.G.A (Not OK), that comes packed with a stern message from their experiences with teenage racism. There are not enough Caribbean Americans playing hardcore out there, but you only have to look back at the success of the highly influential Bad Brains to see how they became a game changer. It’s now Radkey’s turn to make sure that messages like this continue in a world that is now seems so blasé about their freedom of speech.

To ears that have been soaked in every possible hardcore release since 1984, the brothers Radkey proudly wear their influences on their sleeves and play an awesome blend of shit-kicking punk rock. They should be heard and seen live when they play Download Festival this month (16th) and their debut London show on Wednesday June 19th at Camden’s Barfly venue. Download or stream the full 5 track EP from here.
