Glen E. Friedman’s My Rules exhibition opens in London

glen_e_friedman_my_rules_exhibition_london

Glen E. Friedman’s new photography exhibition opened in London last night at the beautiful gallery on 14 Henrietta Street. Queues of people turned up to celebrate the opening of his iconic skate and music photography exhibition My Rules, his first show since 1997 at the ICA.

The building, made up of many small rooms and staircases, seems a perfect fit for this show. Many of his most famous shots grace the bare brick walls including classic work with Black Flag, Fugazi, Minor Threat, Tony Alva, Duane Peters, LL Cool J, Jello Biafra, Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, Ice Cube, and the late Jay Adams (RIP) to name but a few. Audio installations are also set up in various rooms with words from Ice-T, Ian MacKaye, Alan “Ollie” Gelfand and an unreleased audio interview between Adams and Friedman recorded throughout the making of the book.

It’s an intelligent walk down memory lane from a golden era in music and skateboard culture throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s that in retrospect, seems so innocent and compelling in comparison to today’s capitalist, internet-led culture. Song writers who changed a generation with their lyrics and ground breaking music within punk rock and hip hop culture are set amongst pool and back yard ramp sessions that speak a thousand words, all caught in the moment and frozen in time by Friedman’s lens. It’s a must see for anyone interested in reminiscing a legendary golden era characterized by a generation with a voice, fueled by passion and creativity.

Get yourself down to 14 Henrietta St, Covent Garden, WC2H where entry is by voluntary donation. You can purchase copies of the new My Rules book, posters and t-shirts at the show that runs until January 18th 2015.

New skate and donut shop opening in Leigh

Skaters of Leigh-on-Sea in Essex will be treated to top end donuts when a new skate shop called the June Store opens this month.

Leigh was famed for its beach front skatepark back in the early 90s due to a chin ramp style fascination of spined mini-ramps. It had us addicted for years as there was nowhere else like it in the country. This time the addiction will be sugar sweet due to co owner Joe Smith’s chef skills, who sees donuts as a dangler to pull people in to spend dough on their hardware and clothing. Apparently their flagship LOS Donuts will be made down the road and shipped in fresh for jammy customers every morning.

The new shop is also co-owned by Southend skater Andy Williamson and ‘gorgeous’ David Watson, whose knee injury has kept him out of the game for a while now. The trio plan to open on Broadway West on Saturday November 22nd. Look out for it if you are a dagger.

OOZING WOUND

oozing_wound_earth_suckOOZING WOUND
Earth Suck
Thrill Jockey

Chicago’s Oozing Wound first rocked my world to its seismic core when I heard their fragrantly titled Split LP with Black Pus, Brian Chippendale from Lightning Bolt’s side project. Their song ‘Ganja Gremlin’ and its wry take on an anti-drugs campaign showed that these guys took life with a pinch of -ahem- salt, even though their willingness to thrash is deadly serious.

On a similar vein, ‘Hippie Speedball’, from their second proper album Earth Suck (gravity to you and me) is, in the words of singer Zack Weil, about “the finest pairing of the succulent Cannabis Sativa to the delectable Coffea Arabica. It’s about weed and coffee, dude”.

To call them self-effacing is an understatement – they use a quote from the New Yorker magazine about being “happy to be a cheap imitation of Metallica and Slayer” as their social media tagline. They are no comedy band though, their musicality is super tight and their record collections obviously expansive – I can hear elements of Dischord label bands in amongst the death metal darkness. Give it a go, not least so you can watch your friends and family’s reaction when you tell them you love Oozing Wound.
