RIP Steven Bingo Binks – Five Bridges send off Sunday

steve_bingo_binksApologies for the lack of skate news yesterday but we felt as though it wasn’t relevant considering the news that had broke of Steven ‘Bingo’ Binks sudden misfortune.

For those of you who didn’t know Bingo, he ran the Mischief Skate Shop in Stockton-on-Tees for the last 15 years and was one of the most dedicated skateboarders in the UK. He was there for everyone, for whoever needed advice, facts, history or general feedback and doing what he could for the local community to bring them together. Bingo always had a positive attitude, would help anyone and loved posting his views about it on the internet and keeping in touch with us via our social networks.

His sudden departure shocked the skateboard community yesterday. It made everyone realise how important it is to enjoy what we have, whilst we have it. Reading through the tributes on the forum thread at Sidewalk yesterday and the comments on Steve’s Facebook page was nothing but heartbreaking. Today, people have reacted the only way they can and that’s by remembering the good times and creating an event to send Bingo off, the way he would have done for others. Hosted by the skaters of Teeside, this memorial jam will be held this Sunday 13th February at the Five Bridges spot in Gateshead from midday and go on throughout the afternoon into the evening. See the Facebook page here for full details and click here for a map.

The skaters of Teeside had this memorial graff up on the wall last night in honour of the great man that has been forwarded via twitter and facebook all night long. We are thinking of all of his friends and family down here in the South, celebrate his life this weekend to the full and remember, we have one life, enjoy it to the full.

Steven ‘Bingo’ Binks RIP.

Thanks to Ronny Calow for posting this portrait on facebook.

Half and Half: Welsh skate scene documentary trailer

Jono Atkinson has been lurking down in Wales now for a couple of years after relocating from London and has been captivated by their vibrant skate scene ever since. Rather than just soak it up he decided to get amongst it and put a documentary together of what the South Wales scene is doing right now compared the rocking 80’s scene in Swansea when skateboarding exploded with help from footage logged back in the day by Tomsk.

Those who are as old as me as I type this will remember the amazing sessions at the Swansea vert ramp so expect some gems to be dug up. Enjoy this short trailer for now and look out for the DVD very soon.

New Kill City edits and team update

The Welsh Kill City machine is marching forward at pace this month with two new edits that went live to the web last night and abunch of future plans.

Flow riders Sam Pulley and Jake Collins who both smashed our Xmas Jam back in December feature in a new edit from an event hosted at The Boardroom in Leicester and also have some of their best tricks that were from the Xmas Jam itself, watch them below.

Team slayer Lee Dainton is currently working on filming for a new video called Rookies that is scheduled to come out this summer and hopefully there will be some new footage of Caradog Emanuel. The dog has spent the last 3 months tagged up from the rozzers as a result of being involved in a drunken punch up and has had to sit out an 8.30pm curfew so it’s good to hear that the shackles are finally off.

Tour wise, the Kill City team are planning a mini UK tour this year with friends at Witchcraft Skateboards and are set to hook up with the Euro’s for a Hobo Code trip. Watch these fresh edits below and look out for their Spray series decks in your local skater owned shop.

The Devil’s Toy – 1966 skateboarding film

Thanks to the Tweaker blog we have managed to wake up to this little beauty today, a documentary on skateboarding shot back in 1966 aptly titled The Devils Toy. It was shot in Montreal, Canada by film maker Claude Jutra in a time where it was very much frowned upon to be rolling the streets on clay wheels, throwing rocks at the cops and generally having the best time ever. The cops hated skateboarders who rolled in trench coats and turtle neck tops and confiscated their decks only to be given back to kids at the local ice rink where skateboarding was allowed.

Doused in a sincere narrative to accompany classic black and white footage The Devil’s Toy may well have set the tone for skateboarding being a punk choice in life from the off and most certainly would have been the first ever Canadian skateboard video ever made. Watch it here and look out for some seriously funny B-movie sounding quotes such as: “Beware, the youth of the world is on the move and their aim is to take over!.”
