Live Review: Childhood at Corsica Studios

Childhood w/ LSA
Corsica Studios
10th June 2013

Riding out the wave of success debut single, ‘Blue Velvet’ brought last November, Childhood have returned from the studio with a brand new AA side, ‘Solemn Skies’ / ‘Semester’ packed with dreamy melodies and an infectious groove that’ll have you hitting the replay button for weeks.

There’s a video to match too, ‘Solemn Skies’ premiered on Dazed yesterday, featuring the four piece roaming lush landscapes clad in pastel colours, indulging in a spot of afternoon Frisbee. In celebration of all this larking about, Childhood come together with friends LSA for a release party down by the bridge in Elephant & Castle at Corsica Studios.

Newcomers LSA kick things off tonight, and despite a minimal online presence with only a handful of shows played, front man Will totally commands the stage. LSA plant their own take on that timeless early 00’s guitar driven indie pop sound, and it definitely chimes.

Cockles warmed, Childhood emerge for the main event, flexing effortlessly into their set with ‘Sweeter Preacher’. After gigging their way round England with the Palma Violets last year and a sold out show at Brixton Electric in April, they’ve spent time sharpening up their live set and it shows. Grabbing the audience’s attention instantaneously, Childhood force you to lock in with their tight rhythm section that paves the way for a duo of washed out chords and infectious leads, flowing like water onto the shore of front man Ben Romans Hopcraft’s gentle serenade.

This half-stoned Childhood haze drifts in and out of an upbeat swagger, softly accelerating towards the peak of their set, and the reason we’re all gathered in South London tonight: ‘Solemn Skies’. The single rockets into a sing along chorus followed by a groovy psych-out soundscape to close, approval of which is confirmed with rapturous applause and the throwing back and forth of shoes between crowd and band. Excellent stuff. Last number of the night ‘Bond Girls’ also proves an instant crowd pleaser and a true hit with the ladies it would seem.

The future is certainly bright for this foursome and the idea of an albums worth of these catchy tunes is an exciting one. Will they follow in the footsteps of their Palma peers and carry their phasers down to Rory Atwell’s floating studio to craft a psychy belter? I’m willing to wait and find out.

Hevy Fest moves to Brixton Academy

Hevy Fest line up - BrixtonHevy Fest will not be taking place at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park this summer. Read this new statement issued today:

“Hevy was set to move venue this year and we found the perfect site! It gave us much more room, a more central location, more generous operating hours and it allowed us to drop the dreaded no re-entry rule. It was perfect! We were all lined up to announce our now home, when a well-hidden licensing condition was discovered that would need to be overruled for the site to host Hevy.

Unfortunately the appeal process would take 2 months and we didn’t want to risk a last-minute cancellation if things went sour. So, rather than pursue an alternative and keep you guys hanging even longer, we’ve decided to shelve the camping set-up until 2014 – and instead put on a load of events with the bands already booked, including a new breed of Hevy Fest at Brixton Academy.

Current ticket holders will be offered a refund.

We are currently working on more events to be announced as soon as possible. Hevy would like to thank all the bands, agents and venues for their help in making these shows possible.”

Radkey

Radkey
‘Cat & Mouse EP’
Wreckroom Records

radkey_catandmouse_EPKansas City may not have the hardcore history that the likes of LA, Boston or Washington has in its historical locker, but there’s no reason for that to change in the future aided by the sudden emergence of Radkey. This trio of brothers are set for their first UK live shows this month and take us back into 80s punk rock territory with a sound reminiscent of classic veterans, the Misfits, DOA and the Supersuckers, with a blend of thrashing guitars and upbeat rhythms. It’s rare to see a new band go deep back into that territory these days, the most recent example being Cerebral Ballzy, but these Missouri punks have taken the bull by the horns and said fuck it, that’s what we like, and that’s how we roll.

Fronted by Dee Radke, (who on first sight reminded me of NY skater Harold Hunter, RIP) this band caught attention of many at this years SXSW festival in Texas and are set to release their debut EP “Cat & Mouse” that’s made up of 4 solid punk numbers.

Cat & Mouse‘ kicks it off with Dee’s deeply gratifying vocals, pushing a more rockier approach, with sing-a-long Glenn Danzigms that stick in your head for days, followed by the rampant punk frenzy ‘Out Here in My Head‘. The sing-a-long continues in the catchy and direct, ‘Pretty Things’, until the darker, up-tempo ‘Red Letter’, a tale ‘about a personal vendetta’ with an ex lover, ends to make way for the chugging steez of N.I.G.G.A (Not OK), that comes packed with a stern message from their experiences with teenage racism. There are not enough Caribbean Americans playing hardcore out there, but you only have to look back at the success of the highly influential Bad Brains to see how they became a game changer. It’s now Radkey’s turn to make sure that messages like this continue in a world that is now seems so blasé about their freedom of speech.

To ears that have been soaked in every possible hardcore release since 1984, the brothers Radkey proudly wear their influences on their sleeves and play an awesome blend of shit-kicking punk rock. They should be heard and seen live when they play Download Festival this month (16th) and their debut London show on Wednesday June 19th at Camden’s Barfly venue. Download or stream the full 5 track EP from here.

‘Banshee (Ghost Fame)’
Epitaph Records

Letlive_TheBlackestBeautifulThe details of letlive.’s long-awaited album ‘The Blackest Beautiful’ have been creeping across the internet in a sort of unofficial snail trail but this is the first actual music we’ve had the fortune of hearing. And bloody hell, was it worth the wait. letlive.’s furious melding of punk and hardcore with undeniable R&B influences comes to glorious life in this music video which showcases the band’s infamous live abilities. Having said that, the skills on show here are nothing compared to what you will witness at an actual live show so make sure this is one band you catch in the flesh (at the Vans Warped Tour in the US or headlining across Europe in Sept / Oct). They will melt your face off and rip your heart in two (metaphorically speaking, of course).

‘Banshee (Ghost Fame)’ has a bass driven groove and all the vocal melody, screams and spitting you could want. Jason Butler proves himself as one of the most versatile and skilled vocalists of the genre, whilst purveying some intense lyrical content. You can bet that this is a sign of things to come with the album itself which is set for release through Epitaph Records on 8th July. The term ‘highly anticipated’ doesn’t quite cut it in reference to this record which many are hailing as one of the albums of the decade. On the strength of this introduction, we can see that they might have a point…

2013 belongs to the Soul Punx.
