New Sonic Youth incoming

Sonic Youth are going to release a new compilation album of B sides and old tracks in December.

The album, called The Destroyed Room: B-Sides And Rarities, comes as bass player Kim Gordon says the band are likely to leave Geffen after the new record comes out. She said:

“I don’t really think they want us to stay. They fired a few key people working on [‘Rather Ripped’] a week before it came out, [including] our A&R person – he worked on our last record with us, and that was the first time we had an A&R person in five years, but we liked him. Also a marketing person who had really good ideas. So, I don’t know.”

Townshend storms out of interview

Pete Townshend, the guitarist with The Who, stormed out of a radio interview with US shock-jock Howerd Stern after the co-host, Robin Quivers, mentioned the guitarist’s run in with the police after he had accessed a child pornography website.

He was due to do the interview with bandmate Roger Daltrey but heard the link to the show when Quivers and Stern discussed asking him about it and left. Daltrey finished the interview, backing up his friend saying the show was “sniffing dirty underpants”, and followed with

“Can you imagine you’re accused of this stuff and then you’re found not guilty? If you had to defend yourself through this stuff? The wounds are so deep on the man, and it’s just tragic because he’s got so much to offer”.

The band are about to release Endless Wire, their first new album in 24 years.

Parlophone reveal online demo launch

Parlophone have launched an online demo submission tool which will allow unsigned bands to submit demo recordings over the internet, rather than emailing mp3s or having to physically mail CDs.

Artists can send music and artwork in and will get an email confirming their submission was received. Junior A&R staff will monitor the submissions and pass on those with promise to the more senior A&R staff.

Jehst – Live

The Colony
Micall Parknsun
Jazz Café
13.10.06

After having to stand through an hour’s worth of ridiculously shit nu-soul – is that what you call it? Well, I’m not a 40 year old middle class woman who thinks she can boogie with the youngsters, and that’s the target audience I imagine listening to it – the festivities finally got underway with the opening act of the night at the not-as-packed-as-usual Jazz Café – Micall Parknsun and Dubbledge. They were fun, the brilliant Dunya blasting out as a crowd favourite and some tracks from Fist Of Jah sounding pretty fresh, but the sound didn’t help matters.

The problems continued for Sir Smurf Lil and Conspicuous where continual feedback ruined their quality tracks. Hearing the two rappers break it down to accapella style was cool and they showed their talent, but not hearing beats made the experience that little bit less impressive. Still, the tracks from Smurf’s upcoming album, such as City Night Life, promise a hell of a lot from the record.

Jehst was last out, flanked as always by his hype man Asaviour and they went through the classic live joints – Citizen Smif and People Under The Weather – which became more karaoke from the crowd than performances from the rappers. With material from both MCs albums, including Nuke Proof Suit and Vice City from Jehst and So Northern from Asaviour, the night was full of great tunes. However, being kicked off stage early and not being able to perform High Plains Anthem was a hell of a shame.

This wasn’t the best Jehst show I’ve been to by a long way, the crowd seemed dormant and the sound problems made it hard to get really into the set, but as ever Jehst proved just why he stands head and shoulders about this country’s other wordsmiths. Always a pleasure to be in his presence.

Cobain tops dead earners

Kurt Cobain is officially the largest earning dead person. The former Nirvana man has come top of the Forbes.com poll of top deceased earners. Between October 2005 and October this year, he has earned $50 million, much of which came from the sale of 25% of the band’s catalogue to PrimeWave.

This has meant that Elvis, who is normally top of the poll, is 2nd, with a figure of $42 million.

Smashing Pumpkins new material underway

Jimmy Chamberlain, the drummer for the Smashing Pumpkins has blogged on the band’s MySpace about the new material, saying the band have been working with Terry Date and Roy Thomas Barker. He said:

“Great things are on track for the future. As some of you know we are indeed creating music again. Music that comes from a place so pure it will burn the lies off the very souls of those who try to discount it.

We have arrived at a place in our lives where truth and honesty prevail and we are creating from that place. The universe has a way of letting you know that things are right by introducing people like RTB and Terry into the fold. It’s all part of one big cosmic journey, in so that everyone reading this is hitching their silver chord to the Great Pumpkin Space Train! Hope this helps clear some things up for you.”
