Cavalera brothers back together

Igor and Max Cavalera have recorded new material together for the first time in 12 years.

The brothers have formed Cavalera Conspiracy with Soulfly’s Marc Rizzo and Gojira’s Joe Duplantier with Pantera’s Rex Brown making a cameo on one track. The reunion of the Cavalera brothers has been long anticipated since Sepultura’s last gig in Brixton in 1996 and Max said:

“When Igor and I met at the 10th Annual D-Low Memorial Show and got the instruments in our hands, it was like we had never been separated. The metal was flowing in our veins.”

Rob Sonic

With Def Jux already having release two of the best albums of 2007 already, a strong contender to join them is the new record from Rob Sonic. The rapper-producer didn’t really turn my head with Telicatessen, but the new album has seen him take a giant leap towards his label-mates El-P and Aesop Rock.

The production style has that awesome Def Jux 2007 style that reared its head on I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead and None Shall Pass – the sludgey yet accessible sound that equates to a potent mixture when layered under Sonic’s flow which seems at times as though connected throughout the entire song without pause for breath.

And that is certainly not to say Sonic is coming with some bullshit Sole style delivery which sounds as though he’s about to pass out at the end of every line. No, Sonic’s cadence is nigh-on untouchable which he proves in standout tracks The Over Under, Ready Aim Shoot, Smoke If You Got’um [with a great guest spot from Aes Rock] and the track you can hear above, Brand New Vandals.

Aesop Rock and El-P made 2007 Def Jux’s year, and with this album Rob Sonic just joined them on the podium.

Manchester Orchestra

I couldn’t tell you what Atlanta, Georgia is famous for, but it doesn’t really matter when bands as good as Manchester Orchestra are from there because nothing else could compete.

This 19-year old band produce a sound far greater than their years suggest, with an epic mix of indie and rock. Think a cross between Death Cab For Cutie, Songs: Ohia, Placebo and Arcade Fire, and you start getting close to the awesome mixture of all-out loudness and delicate, whispery songs that feature on I’m Like A Virgin Losing A Child.

The whole album seems very heartfelt, with lyrics that sound more biographical than anything I’ve heard for a while. Songs about real things you have experienced will always be better, have more passion, and be more believable. That’s why Elliott Smith was so good.

The opening track, ‘Wolves At Night‘ has everything you could want from an album opener. Crashing guitars, organs, and a chorus you remember instantly. This leans towards the Placebo end of things and it’s also the debut single from them, so you’ll be hearing it a lot by the time you read this.

One of the best songs on the album is the one that touches on the softer, quieter, Songs: Ohia end of proceedings. ‘Sleeper 1972’ is a melancholy track that seems both sad and cheerful at the same time. There was obviously a lot of emotions going into lines such as “When my Dad died, Worms ate out both his eyes”, and the choral section on this one accompanies it perfectly.

Not to be confused with the philharmonic collective from northwest England, Manchester Orchestra’s debut album will be stuck in your head for some time. I’m not talking lightly when I say it’s one of the best albums I’ve heard in years.

6 Years and still strong!

14.09.07
We have to thank you, yes you for us reaching 6 Years of Crossfire Malarkey today.

6 Years ago on this very day, we threw a party at the Paradise Bar in Kensal Green for skaters because it was just long overdue. September 11th had just gone by and the scene needed to let it all out. The nights turned into days and we could never have imagined where that one get-together would have taken us back then.

To this day nothing has really changed. We are still independent, solely owned and run by skateboarders without the restrictions of corperate bullshit and in control of what we have built 100%.

Raise your glass this weekend to the amount of time and effort you have put into what we do here as so many people contribute to what we do, forming a community that will never be broken or sold to no bugger.

Thanks so much for your support, it means a lot to me personally and the crew here at HQ who work their asses of for the love of skateboarding and great music.

See ya at Southbank for our Jam today or indeed tonight at Klub Kerrang! at Koko for the party.

New Eminem album on it’s way

Eminem is to release a new album it has been revealed.

The bleach-blonde rapper revealed the news when he called Hot 97 radio station during an interview with 50 Cent. He apparently said:

“I’m always working – I’m always in the studio. It feels good right now, the energy of the label. For a while, I didn’t want to go back to the studio… I went through some personal things. I’m coming out of those personal things [and] it feels good.”

Tijauna Knife Fight let rip!

It’s a pleasure to introduce Tijuana Knife Fight to Crossfire who are five dudes living in the greater Los Angeles area, crafting a hard, heavy and loud rendition of good ole’ fashioned Rock n’ Roll.

This EP totally rips, watch this video of ‘Knee Jerk Reaction‘ to get a flavour of what to expect from them. Let’s hope they tour the UK at some point. Zac Slack will be playing this out at Klub Kerrang! and adding it to his playlist, look out for it.
