Hard-Ons

To coincide with the Hard-Ons 2009 European tour, Boss Tuneage has released this 25 track disc that covers 25 years of these rockin’ Aussie reprobates. Yeah, 25 years, count ’em!

Their ’85 debut single, the primal 3 chord “Surfin’ on My Face“, kicks off this journey in time, and charts the evolution and progression of the young punks from Punchbowl into the fuck-heavy twisted beast of a band that are still treading the boards, blowing out Marshall cabs, and generally not giving two-shits for whatever is hip on the High Street. Not a chance!

Yeah, plenty of old favourites for Hard-Ons aficionados to get their teeth stuck in to on this collection with timeless sun kissed bubblegum pop like “Girl in The Sweater”, “Think About you Everyday”, “Just Being With You” and my all time favourite number of the era “Where Did She Come From?”, with “Suck ‘n Swallow” coming in a close second. As the collection builds momentum, and the years chip away, the power gets weightier and it’s cool to hear tracks from the early Nineties “Too Far Gone” album, which was ignored heavily at the time, but I dug massively, so “Notice Me” and “I Do I Do I Do” easily rock my planet.

Taking things bang up to date are tracks from their 3 most recent LP’s, including the hilarious “Race Track” (from 2003’s “Very Exciting”) and the ripping “Carrot Top” that opened up “Most People are Nicer Than Us”, the follow up to “Most People are a Waste of Time“…and song # 25 is a brand new number “Everyone Seems to be Out to Get You“… still doing it!

LeATHERMOUTH

LeATHERMOUTH are a band that has been getting a lot of attention as of late. However I believe this might be due to the fact that their front man is My Chemical Romance guitarist Frank Iero. There are two problems with this, people are going to automatically like them because of the fact the singers in My Chemical Romance, the second problem is that the majority of people that like My Chemical Romance aren’t this band’s target audience.

I fear that because of this people who would normally like this type of music are going to be deterred by the rows of screaming teeny boppers there to see their favourite guitarist in action. That would be a real shame as this band would be liked for all the wrong reasons instead of the fact their music is really good.

I’m 3 songs in and my socks have already been blown across the room. The music infuses traditional hardcore with some more spazzy music and throws in a little bit of metalcore mixed up with some gut wrenching screaming and obnoxious talking. Being a fan of bands like The Locust, Daughters and other “spazzcore” outfits this music is so far removed from My Chemical Romance I really can’t believe it. He did used to be in a band called Pencey Prep that was a little less radio friendly than MCR but nothing as wild as this. Frank and his gang really did go all out on this album. Energetic riffs, great drumming and generally being angry at the world fuel it throughout.

Some songs such as Sunsets are for Muggings are more hardcore orientated, relying on a simpler song structure however they still do the job. The song titles are a little farfetched and immature at times with some examples being This Song is About Being Chased By Monsters and My Lovenote Has Gone Flat, but the music’s very grown up and coherent with how bad society has gotten these days. Although I Am Going To Kill The President of The United States of America takes it a bit too far, maybe Frank woke up on the wrong side of the bed the morning that was written. Silly song titles aside the music really is great and the amount of work that went into these songs is evident.

I really do hope that Frank can shake off the image of being in the black parade and can be respected by fans of this type of genre because the band really deserves it. If you like lyrical content that is genuinely angry and crazy and music that reflects it then this band are exactly that. Don’t be shaken by the fact there will be MCR fans that love one of the band members and check out this album. I tip my hat to them for making it.

New Blood Red Shoes dates

Having been on a live hiatus for what seems like an eternity to touraholics Blood Red Shoes, the Brighton duo are returning for 3 rare live shows before they go into the studio to record.

Steve Ansell and Laura-Mary Carter will be taking this opportunity to test drive some eagerly awaited new material and of course run through tracks from their debut album ‘Box Of Secrets’, that exploded onto the scene back in Spring 08. Here’s the update from Stephen himself:

We’ve taken a few months off from playing live to concentrate on material for the 2nd album. We’re getting itchy feet to play the songs and get a feel for how they work live. You never really know if a song stands up or not until you play it with all the adrenaline of a live show so we’ve booked a few smaller shows to try stuff out, we’ll be playing mostly all new stuff, to get it in shape before we head into the studio to record it all

MARCH

Tues 10 Southend, Chinnerys
Wed 11 Northampton, Roadmender
Thurs 12 Gloucester, Guildhall

Thursday Interview

Trailblazers of the now-rather-oversaturated post-hardcore genre THURSDAY release their new album Common Existance this month.

It’s been a long time coming but boy was it worth the wait. Searing guitars, lush drumming, carefully placed electronic elements and sheer terrifying vocals make this record a must-hear. This much-loved band have paved the way for many bands and given a vital helping hand to more than a few acts who are now insanely huge (My Chemical Romance anyone?).

Thursday continually improve upon their art, even having been at it for over a decade and nothing seems to phase them or prevent the heart-stopping music from flowing. High time for a chat with Crossfire then. Winey G caught up with keyboardist Andrew Everding before the new record’s release…

What thoughts and events led to your unusual approach to releasing new material between ‘A City By The Light Divided’ and the forthcoming ‘Common Existence’? Why did you decide to release ‘Kill The House Lights’ and the Split with Envy before moving onto the next studio full-length?

After parting ways with Island/Def Jam there was somewhat of a golden opportunity to remain unsigned and release both the split and DVD before we put out the next full length. The writing for the record was unfolding into what we knew was going to be a long process, it seemed natural for us to release the DVD and the split in that time. We wanted the split record to be a strict vinyl release and Jeremy at Temporary Residence is very good at this, and he’s involved with Envy, everything seemed to just fall into place.

Are there any (new or old) musical formats that you haven’t had a chance to utilize yet but would like to at some point?

I used to record music at the Belfer Audio Archive in Syracuse, NY. They had the second largest institutional collection of wax cylinder and phonograph recordings. I wouldn’t mind releasing a song on a wax cylinder. Maybe the next film about Thursday should be on laserdisc or beta-max?

Do you think music will ever come to exist in digital form only?

God I hope not. There is a new generation of music listeners that have missed out listening to analog recordings, which is an entirely different experience. It’s not convenient, but it’s a little more soothing to the ears. The charm of listening to a full record front to back is slowly disappearing.

Would you say that there has been a shift in your approach to songwriting over the past two years? How would you describe the change, if so?

I think we scrapped some of the experimentation in exchange for the roots of what we used to do. And we also tried to write the songs with our live performance in mind, since most people know us as a live band.

Your video for ‘Ladies And Gentlemen…’ had a very interesting and original concept. What can we expect from the forthcoming video for ‘Resuscitation of A Dead Man’?

Travis (the director for Ladies and Gentleman) torturing us. I saw the first cut a few days ago. It might be the best video we’ve ever done. It’s crazy, and it was crazy to make. I can’t really give away anything.

What are your favourite tracks on the new record and what do they mean to you?

My absolute favorite is “Circuits of Fever”. It has more to do with the process of writing and recording it than any actual literal meaning. It just hits me in the stomach when I hear it, every time.

Were there many more songs written that didn’t make the record?

Yes quite a few, they will probably be released within the Doves Club which if you sign up for it gives you a new Thursday song or unreleased track every month for a year.

Are you looking forward to getting back to the UK? What are your favourite memories of playing over here?

Yes I am, My favorite memory is flying over for the first time. It was such a big deal for me, to realize that playing music was allowing me to travel all over the world. I still get excited by it.

Is there any particular setting or festival in the UK that you’d like to play but haven’t yet?

Yeah, Glastonbury.

What do you think about the rise of newer British bands to notoriety in the States? Particularly your labelmates Bring Me The Horizon and Gallows?

I’m awaiting to meet Bring Me The Horizon, I heard they are young and kids get all hot and bothered for them. I’ll let you know after I see them live.

Which new bands coming from New Jersey should we be keeping an eye out for?

“Holler, Wild Rose!”

What can we expect from Thursday in terms of live performances and new material over the next year or so?

We’re going to tour as much as we can, playing plenty of new songs as well as the old ones. Maybe Chronological set lists?? New material will be released within our singles/doves club, but you need to sign up for that. Hopefully spending more time in the UK!!

Thursday release their new album Common Existance on Epitaph Records on Monday 16th February.

ETID sign to Epitaph

Every Time I Die have signed to Epitaph Records.

Keith Buckley and co. are working on new material at the moment and said of the new deal:

“We are extremely honored and humbled by the faith that our new family at Epitaph has placed in us to continue writing music that is true to ourselves and true to our supporters. While most bands are looking for their 15 minutes of fame, Every Time I Die knows that Epitaph is the ONLY label where the soil is fertile enough for punk/rock bands to thrive on the ethics that got them started and we are proud to hang our hats within their walls. Our first Epitaph release will be recorded this spring with Steve Evetts and thus far is proving to capture the excitement of our new lease on life and the aggressive energy we are notorious for. See you in hell, otherwise known as the road.”
