Jay Reatard attacked on stage

Jay Reatard was attacked by two members of the crowd in Austin.

The singer was performing at Emo’s when he was attacked during the final song of the set. The two men, 20 and 23, were arrested and charged with public intoxication. The singer said the attack was “totally unprovoked” but he is unhurt, so all is well in the world.

Drinking out of cups with the seahorses

Ever wondered what your mate would say if he was locked in a closet and tripping off his nuts? And then you recorded it and animated a lizard around what your mate said? No? Well, balls to it, this is great anyway.

Thinks he’s got it going bossa nova. No way. No way. What is this garbage?

NOFX – Live

Jose Cuervo Salon
Mexico City
10.12.09

The folks lined up outside the Jose Cuervo Salon are a highly excited bunch, waiting as they are for a rare NOFX live appearance (apparently this is only the Californian punk rock veterans’ third-ever show in the Mexican capital). Unfortunately my own excitement is tempered somewhat by a bastard of a cold (thankfully not swine flu – I’ve eased up on the ol’ pig molesting), and my prior experience of the Salon’s hit and miss acoustics, which tonight reduce much of Fat Mike and co’s notoriously amusing/sarcastic between-song banter to a muffled echo. Still, the show must go on…

Local boys Gula are clearly excited to have bagged this support slot, and sound remarkably tight as they rip through a clutch of songs that recall latter-day Rise Against with a slight post-hardcore twist. Check them out here. They seem to have a decent amount of their own fans in attendance, and the small but enthusiastic pit that develops at the front is undeniably well-deserved.

Speaking of the crowd (I know, I always do), they go seven shades of mental as soon as NOFX blast the opening chords of ‘Dinosaurs Will Die’ across the room. Beer goes flying everywhere. Half the time you can barely hear Fat Mike’s voice over those of his fans. The pit roughly doubles in size and intensity for the more well-known songs (especially ‘Linoleum’). And when the band return for an encore, they’re somewhat surprised to see that some madman has climbed up onto the rafters of the Salon’s roof – thankfully he heeds their pleas for him not to jump.

And the band themselves? The NOFX of 2009 may have scant regard for any traditional concept of showmanship, but they certainly know how to please a crowd, and tonight, ‘Bottles To The Ground’ and ‘It’s My Job To Keep Punk Rock Elite’ are just a couple of highlights in a set stuffed with bona fide punk rock anthems. They sign off in frighteningly fine style with ‘Don’t Call Me White’, inciting a maelstrom in the crowd that surely threatens to dislodge the Salon’s floor. These guys may be getting a bit long in the tooth, but it has to be said that they remain a damn good reason to drag your cold-ridden self out of the house on a work night.

Doomtree

Regular visitors to Crossfire will know we’ve been repping the Minnesotan Doomtree crew for years now and they’ve done it again, bringing out a fantastic eight-track CD to co-incide with this year’s Blowout, their crew show in hometown Minneapolis.

Their False Hopes series, similar to Atmosphere’s Sad Clown releases, are aimed at tiding fans over for full-length though the standard blows away 99% of other rappers’ albums.

Number 15 in the series showcases the talents of all the members, from Paper Tiger’s punchy We’re Working Hard intro to Cecil Otter’s typically floating and downright pretty Carpe Diem instrumental. Dessa raps hard over a ridiculously fuzzy P.O.S. beat, Mictlan brings in Rich Rok [the only non-crew member on the record] and Lazerbeak’s production continues to astound which you can check out by listening to Sims and P.O.S. do their thing over his beat on Coup For The Kings.

With another full crew banger, Profit & Loss, following in the incredibly huge footsteps of No Homeowners and Drumsticks, to be found, it’s a wonder why there are people out there that don’t know them. As P.O.S. says in the track above, “We ain’t next cos we right now”. They’re untouchable, get involved.

Suicidal Tendencies live DVD incoming

Suicidal Tendencies
will release ‘Live at the Olympic Auditorium’, their first ever DVD, on January 26th via their own label Suicidal Records.

As vocalist Mike Muir says – “The band started getting emails from some crazy guy that always said, ‘I know you’ll probably think I’m crazy, but I’m not. I’m wanna book ST for a show and I got this idea…’. Well, one by one we shot down the ‘unique’ ideas until one time he emailed and said the Olympic Auditorium was being bought by a Korean Church. Shouldn’t it be sent off with a special last gig? The band agreed and then the work began. The promoter — Evel Dick Donato who went on to win Big Brother – tells a bit about the show, making of etc. on the intro. Lots of drama, none more than the day before the show when I woke up and couldn’t walk. But the show must go on and the back surgery would have to wait till afterwards. Suicidal recorded live at the Olympic Auditorium in front of 4,000 Cycos… but now you can enjoy it in the safety of your living room.”

There you have it. Trade the moshpit for your sofa. The 80 minute set is as follows:

01. “Intro”
02. “I Shot Reagan”
03. “War Inside My Head”
04. “Subliminal”
05. “Ain’t Gonna Take It”
06. “Suicidal Failure”
