Snoops can come back to UK

Snoop is allowed back in the UK.

The rapper had been denied entry to the UK last year, prompting gig cancellations after he had been cautioned in 2006 on suspicion of affray after being arrested at Heathrow. Speaking on CNN, Snoop said that the judge had found him innocent and he was able to go back, adding:

“So everybody in the UK, big Snoop Dogg will be back to come give you all what you want!”

Burton buys AWS and Habitat

DNA Distribution, which includes skateboarding brands Alien Workshop, Habitat and Reflex, has announced that the company has been acquired by Burton.

The two companies, which have been in talks for over a year, agreed that they shared a similar goal in improving boardsport products and the welfare of their team, so closed a deal to be under one roof.

DNA Distribution will continue to operate in Dayton, Ohio and CEO and Co-Founder Chris Carter will continue to oversee the DNA brands, which include Alien Workshop, Habitat and Reflex Bearings.

“We are very excited to bring the DNA family of brands to Burton – a company that we truly respect,” says Chris Carter, Chief Executive Officer for DNA Distribution. “Burton clearly leads their market in terms of team, innovation, marketing and values. Joe, Mike and I look forward to leveraging Burton’s strengths to reach the full potential for the DNA brands: Alien Workshop, Habitat and Reflex.”

“Through surfing and snowboarding we have learned that hardgoods are the foundation of all boardsports, and with the addition of DNA to our family, we are on our way to delivering skaters what they want and expect,” says Jake Burton, Founder and Chairman of Burton. “As with Al Merrick and the crew at Channel Islands, the relationship with Chris, Mike and Joe at DNA has been a natural fit right from the start. Everyone around here is committed to growing Burton into a true boardsports company, so I am confident that we can provide a home where DNA and their team of skaters can build upon what they have already excelled at in the skate industry.”

“We couldn’t have found a better company to work with than DNA,”
says Laurent Potdevin, Burton’s Chief Executive Officer.“Burton and all of its brands are authentically committed to snowboarding, surfing and skateboarding without distractions from other sports, products or categories. This acquisition completes a strategy that we have been very focused on for quite some time and marks a new milestone in the evolution of Burton and its family of brands.”

Dashboard Confessional – live

Scala, London.
20th January 2008.

What better way to conquer the Sunday night blues than fight fire with fire? Best known for his heart wrenching lyrics mixed with a wonderfully bitter tongue and melancholic outlook, Chris Carrabba, ex frontman of Further Seems Forever, played one of his first gigs of the 2008 with a sold out show at Scala.

Having left his band mates cooling their heels in Florida, preparing to record the new album, Carrabba’s playing on borrowed guitars in a venue that’s packed to the rafters with a crowd of all ages. In the ten years that he’s been performing under the mantle of ‘Dashboard Confessional‘ he’s attracted a cult like fan base, which is evident tonight in the word perfect sing-alongs that almost drown his voice out.

Kicking off proceeding with ‘The Swiss Army Romance‘ which we’re rarely treated to live, it becomes clear that we could be in for some old favourites. “Tonight I’m going to pay a lot of old songs” – cue cheering- “…and some new ones!” -cue booing. However Carrabba is in a jovial mood, laughing and joking with the crowd and taunting us with the opening chords of ‘Screaming Infidelities’ before pausing, laughing and throwing himself back into the track. Picking and choosing from 5 studio albums, Carrabba is open to suggestions from the crowd, and apologizes if he’s missed out anyone’s favourites, promising to just keep on coming back till he’s kept everyone happy.

Stripped of his backing band, Carrabba still exudes an amazing stage presence. He has the ability to look at home on any stage, be it at a sold out Madison Square Gardens, or in the tiny Barfly. ‘The Good Fight’ rings out loud across the audience, and ‘Don’t Fight’ is treated like an old favourite. ‘Vindicated’, usually played with crashing guitars, has a new passion and attitude, so much so that even Carrabba himself concedes that he’s never heard it so good. During ‘Where There’s Gold’ two bras are pinged onto the stage, and Carrabba seems very taken with the leopard print one, “It has rhinestones..and its says ‘Sexy’ on it…like the leopard print and rhinestones weren’t enough?” he laughs.

Tonight there is something very compelling about Chris’s performance, he has the ability to vocalize thoughts and emotions in a way rarely bettered by others. We’re treated to a new song ‘ Get Me Right’ which is sharp and exciting, proving that despite that seemingly incessant album releases, it’s clear that they have many more quality tracks waiting in the wings. Highlight of the night goes to ‘Again I Go Unnoticed’, a punchy track that always sounds so much better when it’s stripped down, the anger, the desperation pouring out some from lyrics that are shouted back from the audience.

It’s hard to believe it’s been a decade since Dashboard Confessional took it’s first faltering steps, Carrabba’s way of coping after a particularly acrimonious breakdown. For an artist to generate such a fervent and loyal fan base over so many years proves what a talented singer/songwriter he is, and tonight he’s cements his position at the forefront of the genre.

Consolidated – Goin’ Bananas

07/02/08

If you walk into your SOS and ask to see what Consolidated have to offer video-wise, you are bound to watch a bunch of sick skaters get down on a wide variety of terrain to a soundtrack of classic rock and proper gangster rap. Oh, and a subliminal mockery of the industry too. Goin’ Bananas is the latest release from skateboarding’s restless gang of cruisers, and the content is pretty much standard issue ATV schralpage, with a few extra bonus points that hint towards a sign of the times.

First of all, you’ll spot UK heads Ben Raemers and Ollie Tyreman get proper sections alongside their American veterans. This is good to see, and the two youngsters hold their own against their elder and more established peers. Ollie skates full of agro, whilst Ben plays around with massive hubbas and vertical transitions alike. These two aren’t the only new faces to the Consolidated pack, Sean Guttierez represents the Barrio with some smooth annihilation of tranny heavy spots, whilst Tanner Zalinsky speeds his way across the suburban concrete playground of middle America. Maru from Japan puts on a pretty good show of determination as he rips his way through all kinds of sketchy spots.

For the older more recognizable faces, Karma Tsocheff signs off a good part even though you can’t but help get the feeling that you’ve seen better from the OG Conso rider. Mike Peterson gets cock blocked by Kyle Berrard for trying to steal the comic relief, but both of these men fly through the place stomping their authority on every continent. Finally, Roberto Aleman gets a well deserved last part and seems to have taken the dictum “Stronger, Faster, Longer” to heart when he filmed his shocking part.

The overall feel you get from Goin’ Bananas is that Consolidated have tried to evolve a little bit be it with new riders, or simple editing techniques. However, the same undercurrent of an independent hands-on approach steers the way for this bands of brothers. You can’t knock a team that can actually skate anything, and I mean anything, you put in their path.
