Jason Adams Corporate Overkill deck

Hurrah, another free board to thrash. Moose said he was going to send me up a Jason Adams pro from Black Label, the only skateboarder in the world to wear shorter trousers than me (and they ain’t reason why I tried to grow a greaser quiff a while back). I’m totally out of whack with anything to do with skating because I thought “The Kid” was still on that “other” company, but apparently he’s gone back to suckle on the teat that reared him. Which is fine by me. Until, that is, I started tearing open the package, in a manly way, when I thought I saw a flash of, no, it can’t be this is Black Label here, no, oh my god… someone sent me a pink skateboard. A neon pink skateboard. And to make matters worse- it was indeed a Adams Black Label pro model. What the hell am I suppose to do with a pink skateboard?

So I took to my backgarden morgue to do a some pre-skate analysis.
I found a dead mouse. It was quite small, looked like it’d been there for a while- but the cool thing about small dead things is they don’t smell that much. I was hoping loads of guts and whatnot would spill out of it once I twatted it with the pink skateboard. But to my dismay it just went really really flat in a puff of dead dust. Mildly peaved at the lack of gore (but stoked that I had acquired a spanking new book mark) I went to go see how my headless deer corpse was fermenting. Gore assured.

I hadn’t gone to look at him in about a week, and he was a real mess back then. Ripped intestines spilling undigested deer poo everywhere and the rest of it’s innards seemed to have corroded it’s bum hole into gigantic proportions. But would you believe it, someone must of been uber hungry because there wasn’t much left of him. The hot smell was still there, but little else- I even I had to go and retrieve a couple of legs that some disrespectful little cretin must of pulled off. So to add insult to injury I stuck the pink skateboard deep in it’s bowels to hopefully purify it of it’s girliness. And I think it worked a treat.

Apart from the pink, the only other thing wrong with the skateboard is the fact it has a nose. I don’t think Jason Adams does any nollie tricks, I certainly don’t, so why bother putting one on. Instead they should have mounted a roadkill skull on the front, which I would of thought would fit Adams down to a T.

So what have you learnt reading this review? Let’s recap-

1) Black Label skateboards are good for flattening dead mice.
2) Black Label skateboards fit nicely into deer carcass’.

That and heavy metal is a wonderful thing. Today I recommend Rompeprop’s “Menstrual Stomphulk”.
Innit.

Zombie.

Emerica X-Ray backpack

Following a some bone-graft surgery on a fairly ruined scaphoid, my Mum decided I needed a rucksack, seeing as the daily 5 mile cycle to central London wasn’t going to happen again anytime soon and feeling like I’d had my hand stamped on made me think ‘What the hell, a freebie’s a freebie’. Besides as anyone in the ‘smashed scaphoid gang’ will know the only gesture a scaphoid cast will allow is a permanent thumbs-up.

Why my judgement lapsed into insanity I don’t know. I blame the anaesthetic, because as we all know mums are completely incapable of purchasing anything remotely stylish, especially my Mum, as those who know me will know, enjoys amateur archaeology, civil war re-enactment societies and anything to do wish lay-lines or stone circles in her spare time. Which is all pretty rad in my opinion, but doesn’t help when choosing fashion conscious apparel.

What she bought me really was ‘special’ to say the least. The warning signs were there what with there being a Clarks shoe shop in Peckham, which seems to lure parents of my mums generation in, with promises of the quality of yesteryear, and made a whole generation of children look like dorks in primary school and ruined their confidence for the rest of their lives, because all I wanted was the kickers with the green and red tabs on the shoes and the leather boat tops like all the other kids had!

Oh, sorry. To this day the most positive comment I received on my new convenience related accessory was that it made me look like I had ‘a touch of the Downs’. After 2 weeks recovery and against the advise of my consultant I was back on the stallion, and back shredding Pecknarm bowl and in need of a rucksack that didn’t make me feel like a twat, so Moose swooped in to save the day.

Subtle this Emerica rucksack is not, verging dangerously on crusty-fat-pink haired Goth girl it is, but my son thinks its cool, so I guess it must be. The first day I used it was officially the wettest day of the year, and the only things that were dry by the end of my ride were my crotch and the inside of this rucksack. To sum things up its pretty cool, you feel like a psychedelic art-school stage Dennis the Menace wearing it, you can put stuff in it and keep it dry (leaky-thermos permitting) and it and you can strap a skateboard to it, not that anyone has ever done that because it makes you look like a massive dick.

Scott Magill ‘Who?’ interview

Wales has always had a strong skate scene, but over the last few years you would have been forgiven for not seeing past the Dirty Sanchez boyos and the Kill City scene due to their exposure.

Philip Procter caught up with independent filmer Scott Magill to have a chat about Who? – the Welsh scene video that exposes some of the hidden talent locked away over the border…

Hey Scott – Hows it going fella?

All good man.

Cool, lets start with the basics, where you from, age etc:

Single, Male – looking for attractive female. (laughs) Nah, 20 years old and from Bridgend, Wales.

What got you involved in skating, how long has it been?

Started in 2000, guess my mates started and I got a deck from Argos, Argos for life!
I was skating with guys from my year at school, but they all quit after a while, so it was just me left basically. I loved skating so carried on and started to skate with Chris Wilson and he introduced me to everyone from there.

So Chris was the first guy you filmed?

Yeah, I started filming him and all the other guys and we made a shitty little scene video called Second Nature. We burnt 70 copies on my PC and flogged them in a local skate shop – we sold 60, pretty stoked considering they were £10 a pop.

What was the first skate video you saw?

It was a Logic, My nextdoor neighbour loaned it to me and I must have watched it at least 5 times a day! One of the first I got stoked on was Osiris, The Storm all the OGs, Scott Paazelt and Jerry Hsu were my heroes back then.

I bet you didn’t appreciate the work that had gone in to videos back then either, tape to tape steez.

Didn’t even cross my mind, probably so much harder back then as well.

On to “Who?” – how long did it take to get the footage?

2 and a half years I guess, last time I checked I had 2000 tricks on my external hardrive, most of the footage is a year and half old and I combined it with the newer stuff so it saw the light of day. Richard Tyler is responsible for most of the double angle shots.

So, who features in Who?

We have Chris Wilson, Chris Jones, Jess Young, Dai Williams, Alan Williams, Caradog Emanuel, Nick Batt, Dylan Hughes, Nicky Howells, Rhys Meek and a ton of other locals.

What hardware did you use to make this?

I use the Sony VX2100 with a Mark1 death lens and edit in Final Cut Pro.My camera is starting to fall apart, it took 3 or 4 direct lense hits from bails during filming, its doing ok tho considering ive used it everyday pretty much for the past 2 years.

You need to get that puppy insured…

Yeah I gotta do that one day soon, did you see in the credits section of Who? Tyler falls face first on his VX, probably the funniest thing I ever filmed!

Haha yeah I saw that, if only Beadle was still alive!

One of the Boyos actually sent that in to You’ve been Framed!

There is no shortage of hard slams in Who?, ever feel bad about keeping the video rolling?

Nah, its all part of the fun, a lil bit of filmers revenge never hurt anyone!

Travel much shooting for the vid?

Nah, not nearly enough, some London and bits in MK.

I think I spied the Gasworks in Manchester?

Ah yeah, that was filmed by George Nevin, he filmed some of Nickys stuff as he now lives in Bristol. So yeah Bigup George, he’s filming for the new Bristol in Bloom video at the moment, so look out for that this summer.

Didn’t see any mandatory Barca footage.

Nah, would have been nice, but it’s a PROPER scene video, Welsh BOYO! We filmed mainly in and around Cardiff, just wanted to show the best and worse of what Wales has to offer.

Takes me back to industrial estates and school yard sessions on Sundays, some good looking spots.

Yeah, but most of the spots look way better on camera, but if you actually go to the spot they are so ghetto.

But the skaters did them proud! I’ve got Who? Playing in the background, who is that lil dude?

That’s Caradog, such a little shit, he is 18 too! He is the only skater on there who speaks fluent Welsh before you ask.

No way?! Id never serve him in a bar, he looks like Zammo off Grange Hill! How are the guys doing for sponsorship etc?

I think everyone who had sections are pretty much hooked up, Rhys (Meek) just got hooked up with Alien Workshop flow from Shiner, so yeah, pretty sick, we filmed his part in 4 months, he wasn’t originally going to have a part but his stuff was sick so we had to squeeze him in with a joint part.

Great skating all round in this film, I thought Nicky Howells part was a standout, is that fair?

Well yeah, Nickys part is shocking. But everyone stepped up at the same time.

Fuck, someone just pinged a 360 nollie heel flip down like 9 steps! Any standout tricks your feeling?

Yeah that’s Dai (Williams), he got nollie lazers on lockdown, So many tricks, its hard to pick out, everyone has got hammers, you have to see some of the spots to truly appreciate some of the tricks to be honest.

I think spot wise, I’d compare this DVD to Static 3 – some proper grimey spots.

Welcome to Wales!!

Lots of cracked paving and stuff……..

Yeah we love it! We take a hammer to them for added gnar! Who wants to skate a perfect spot in perfect weather huh?

Perfect is over rated man…

Amen.

Filming for anything else?

Filming some stuff for the Motive video as Dylans (Hughes) is on them. Im not sure what im filming for at the moment really, just building up the footage, I have a few things on the horizon.

Ok Scott, wrap this up for me, got any shout outs?

Yeah man, thanks – big shouts to friends and family, all the boyos in Who?, Tyler, Dainton, Caddy, George Nevin and the Bristol lot, Dykie, Sk8uk and Crossfire for the hype, and everyone else who helped along the way! Peaceee

Who? is on general release right now. Click here to read the Crossfire review. Visit www.myspace.com/whovideo and www.bridgenders.com for all Who info and pick up a copy for just £5, you will not regret it.

Between The Trees – Live

Barfly – London
08.02.08

The first thing that struck me when I arrived at Barfly on this evening was that for a sold out show not many people were about, but that only meant that I could at least bag myself a decent spot from which to stand and watch Between The Trees, a band who although little known already have an extensive touring list under their belt.

Opening with “Forward” a song “we wrote about you” I’m pleasantly surprised to find that they are full of energy and enthusiasm, rather than the moody emo vibe I was expecting considering a lot of the subjects the touch upon. They even managed as the set progressed to get the audience that had gathered to watch to drop the pretence of being to cool to dance and at least have a little teeny bop.

The next song “Fairweather” begins smelling like Panic @ The Disco with the can’t help but tap your feet rhythm holding it all together and the lyric “Your heart starts racing like a bullet from a gun” sung with such a perfect clarity that I feel as though I have actually just been shot. Lead singer Ryan Kirkland has one heck of a set of lungs and a voice so perfect in its pitch and tone that I never notice him falter in the entire set. I’m willing to bet that he’s never smoked a cigarette in his life and he trains his voice as often as he prays, and judging from the many hidden and obvious references to God in their songs I’d say he’s at least a 3 times a day kind of guy.

Props to their lighting man as it’s perfectly balanced against the emotions of each tune never more so than the red moody lighting in “The Way She Feels”. A song that deals with a very current media issue of self harm the red lighting and slow build into a chorus of “Then she closed her eyes, found relief in a knife” the band tell a story with their performance. Affiliated with “To Write Love On Her Arms” (www.myspace.com/towriteloveonherarms) they’re even selling the shirts in their merch which they shamelessly ask you to buy because the suitcases are too heavy to take home to Orlando.

I can completely envisage these guys on a much larger stage as The Barfly seems to stifle them, its closeness being too close. They look cramped, as if they have so much more to give and not the room to spread their wings. They play a new song “Story Of A Boy” which at first I thought was pretty brave as they’re trying to win this rooms affection, but heck in that situation you may as well just give them whatever you fancy right? I’d say that this band are pretty upfront and ready to rise to any challenge, hell they dealt with the pretentious crowd in the room with playful banter designed to draw attention to the fact that they were feeling segregated up there on stage. Ryan gets on the piano and this is the only time I can fault their performance because underlying somewhere in this song a beat was out or something was off key, but it was so slight that had I just been watching for my own entertainment I’m quite sure I’d never even have noticed.

Closing with “Red Lights, White Lines” I’m wishing that they had a few more to give, but alas it was over with a mouthful of water from Brad Kriebal (lead guitar) spat in the face of Mr Kirkwood. Beat, melodies, lyrics and a tight performance this band have all the ingredients to bake you a cake and send you home happy. Entertaining you is what they’re there to do and they do it so well that they manage to have a load of fun too.
