Jack White teams up with Bob Dylan

Jack White has spoken about his work on a project organised by Bob Dylan.

Dylan asked a number of musicians to write music for a set of unfinished lyrics by Hank Williams, with White recording You Know That I Know. The album is set to be released this year but that’s not all from White, who has said:

“There’s some other stuff I have coming out, but I can’t tell you about it all just yet. You’ll have to be patient!”

Portishead’s new album is very different

Portishead‘s new album is a “departure” from their previous albums.

Third, which is out on April 28th, will see some faster tempos from the band, with some tracks hitting 120bpms. Adrian Utley said of the new record, the first in 11 years:

“It sounds nothing like ‘Dummy’ or ‘Portishead’, but it’s definitely its older brother or sister. It’s the same mindset we’ve always had, only further down the road….There was never no Portishead. It was just we’d had enough, and we didn’t have any ideas.”

Warbringer

If you have so much as a passing interest in contemporary metal, you should be aware that we are currently in the midst of a rather exciting thrash revival; with bands like Evile, Municipal Waste, Fueled By Fire, and SSS breathing new life into a genre renowned for its aggression, warp-speed riffing and chaotic live performances. Now welcome Warbringer; five young guys from Los Angeles, whose debut album suggests that 2008 will be a vintage year for thrash.

‘Never judge a book by its cover’, they say; but you’ll be pleased to hear that the contents of ‘War Without End‘ are as impressive as the gloriously OTT cover (see above). These guys rip through the likes of ‘Total War‘ and ‘Hell On Earth‘ with brutal speed and precision, and vocalist John Kevill is blessed with a particularly potent, rasping scream. And if you’re still not convinced, then you might like to know that legendary thrash producer Bill Metoyer was on production duties for this particularly enticing slice of aural carnage. He’s done a damn fine job, too.

Derivative? Perhaps. Invigorating? Definitely. Check out ‘Dread Command‘ on the link above.

Throats

So, it was a cold Wednesday afternoon and after being subjected to 50 Cent and Thomas the Tank Engine mash ups all day, I decided it was time for a noise revolution. I was looking for something erratic and loud and boy did I find it.

Ladies and gentlemen, I introduce to you ‘‘Throats’.This brutal 5 piece from London are loud and proud. If you’re looking for a melody, some polished riffs and some sweet sweet lyrics about your emo ranger girlfriend, then I suggest you grab your Punkyfish bag and exit because these boys aren’t for you.

I whacked this on at Crossfire HQ yesterday and this was one response from ex- Kerrang! writer James Sherry – ‘This is fucking great. It makes me want to carve through a forest with a chainsaw whilst kicking small furry animals into tree stumps. I’m going to see them play live asap!’

Converge fans….get your ear ‘oles around this….and then look out for their record on Holy Roar Records soon.

Enter Shikari – Live

Astoria – London
Sunday 25th February

I think it’s pretty safe to say that there really are only two types of people in this world. Those who get Enter Shikari, and those who don’t. For many, they just don’t fit.

They aren’t this genre, they aren’t that. They are however, fortunate as tonight London’s Astoria was packed to the rafters with those who ‘do’, and if there’s anything a real Shikari fan knows more than anything, it’s that the live performances are something special. Nay. Explosive. With a two month gap between this and their last UK show, tonight – things were guaranteed to be special.

With enough pyrotechnics to make November 5th dull the St. Albans quartet launch onto the stage to self titled track ‘Enter Shikari’, quickly afterwards upping the tempo and diving into ‘The Feast‘. At this point it’s evident that tour fatigue has set in quite considerably and the band, valiant as they struggle to keep the pace up throughout the rest of the set. ‘Anything Can Happen In The Next Half Hour‘ is warmly received but ‘Labyrinth‘ and ‘Johnny Sniper‘ win the awards for being the biggest crowd pleasers of the night.

A standard semi-acoustic version of ‘Adieu‘ is met with cheers and a vocal volley but with a metal-bastardisation of the Faithless track ‘Insomnia’ the band take the notably young crowd into a frenzy, almost the icing on the cake. ‘Mothership‘ follows and with an encore of ‘Sorry You’re Not A Remix‘ and then of course the original ‘Sorry You’re Not a Winner‘, the band leave an audience cowering in their wake.

It’s fair to say tonight that the band struggled a little bit. The set was lively, and the guys really pulled it out the bag at the end but mid-way through it was evident that essentially, they need to rest, and you know what? I don’t think any of their fans will begrudge them that. Shikari are one of the most exciting live bands on the UK scene and even at half mast they have more energy than most. Go and write your new album…we look forward to the insanity.
