The images of these in the adverts were too good not to replicate on my feet so within a week we had them in the office and they did not let us down, these are seriously comfy shoes.
Mikey Taylor’s name has come up a lot in the last year and Etnies loyalty to his steez has been these beauties. I met Etnies UK team rider Mark Nicolson for a skate in the same week and he had a pair on and swore by them, so here’s his own thoughts on these most saught after pair of kicks.
“My first impressions were that the shoe really looks good. The Don Pendleton artwork on the tongue is a nice little touch, Classic Workshop style as always. The shoe has a very popular slim style and vulcanized sole which provides fantastic board feel but not so much that you hurt your feet if you jump down anything. Anyone who rides Etnies knows this is due to the System G2 heel insert that provides good shock absorbtion. The one piece toe cap initially looks like it might not survive too long but I was surprised to find it’s a lot harder wearing than I thought. In a nutshell, these are up there with the very popular shoes of the moment like the Emerica Reynolds 3’s and Leo Romero’s and I can’t wait to get some more!
Look out for a Death/Etnies collaboration shoe out very soon.
Let’s face it, people have long since stopped looking to Bam for anything other than dicking around, which is a shame really as, all hijinx aside, he’s not a bad skater, which often gets overlooked. Unfortunately, this 15 minute promo, featuring a selection of Element’s pro and am team skating it up at Bam HQ for Halloween, doesn’t really do a lot to detract from that notion.
You must know the drill by now: as with all “Bam-Brand” video exports, expect male nudity, motorised vehicles with 8foot polystyrene cock attachments, questionable half baked plans that probably seemed like a good idea at the time and many examples of cranking it up to 11 and living out the rock n roll lifestyle of all proskater megastars, Lamborghinis and all…
Personally, I have nothing against Bam; given the choice of getting paid a lot to act like a retard with your mates or doing it for nothing, then I’ll take the easy money every time and I don’t blame him for doing the same. In addition to this I have never seen him without a grin on his face and unlike many other skate stars out there, you never hear him complain about anything which goes a long way. The problem lies with the Bamfans this DVD is marketed to and who will predictably gobble it right up. It’s a 75-25 mix of tomfoolery to skating, with a few tricks dotted here and there to prove that Bam himself hasn’t completely resigned himself to partymode. Overall its pretty predictable and it’s going to go down a treat with the target audience, but from a skating point of view, I feel it would be better showcasing the skaters talent on the boards instead of their lifestyles off them, but, hey what do I know right?
Pester your local skateshop for it if the mood to see it grips you, alternatively it can be found online at Element’s website and should be checked out for the comedy gold that is Darrell Stanton trying to remain cool on the back of a bright yellow moped whilst whipping through the Pennsylvania undergrowth! There are definitely worse things to watch on a wet Sunday afternoon, watch it below but switch to High Quality for the best viewing.

The recent DJ Vadim night at Herbal was a huge fund-raising success.
The night, put on with the help of DJ Spin Doctor, was to raise awareness and funds for Cancer Research after DJ Vadim had been diagnosed with cancer of the eye. The night was a huge one and with Herbal donating £250, the grand total going to Cancer Research ended up being £3,000!
For every piece you see on a wall by a trainline or adorning a billboard or on the side of a tower block overlooking the city’s skyline, there will be hundreds of sketches in an artist’s blackbook.
These now-famed artists honed their techniques and discovered brand new styles in the pages of these books before unleashing them onto the world and in Piecebook, Sacha Jenkins and David Villorente have managed to get these out to the masses at last.
What sets this book apart from the many others on graffiti is that the sketches are reprinted on a blank page, giving them a bold and brash presences, forcing the reader to acknowledge both the stripped down features of the art and the miniscule details involved in the make up of each piece. Whether they are coloured or left as simply an outline, the effect is just the same and will take hours of perusal to soak up everything between the covers.
The artists used in this book range from Peso 131 [1975] and In1 [1974] to Wild Style renowned Lady Pink [1980] and Lee Quinones [1982] to arguably two of the most revered of them all – Dondi and Iz The Wiz. It truly is incredible to see the early works of some of the pioneers of the graffiti phenomenon, being able to look at how these writers sketched during their own golden age and giving in insight into the work that was put into the art that made them known to the outside world.
This is in incredible book that goes where no other has and promises to be both educational and aesthetically pleasing to anyone that picks it up. A must have.
A new movie featuring Riley Hawk, David Loy, and many more is in the works from Richie Valdez who says:
‘I have been out filming with friends for the homie’s video that has been in the works for the last…well while! This is a project I’ve been wanting to do for some time now. With companies being all gay and shit about themes, content, music, bad words, weed, all that crap…I have set out to just make a raw skate video like lots that come out without company’s backing them. Just videos made by dudes like me who love skateboarding and want to do something fun with friends and have a great time.‘
Skate Movie‘ is a raw skate video set for release in Spring 2009, watch the flames as this looks hot.
