London local turned Minneapolis resident Luke Hunt and girlfriend Kirsten get our congratulations this week as they are now the proud parents of a baby boy.
Vincent Foslien Hunt weighed in at 6lbs 2oz this month and is sure to be cooking back tails as good as his old man soon. Luke wrote in today to spill the news and give us an update on the Minneapolis scene.
“It’s cold as fuck here now with 2ft of snow on the ground, but were building a private indoor bowl, I will keep you posted. This pic is from a private bowl in Madison WI (about 4 hours away) and this is our inspiration for our new spot. CO-OP style. Merry Xmas to all back home!”

A Skateboard film by Lovenskate.
Skateboard DVD’s all tend to follow a similar tract these days, the emphasis is purely on tricks and convincing us that a team is cool, and we should therefore, buy the product.
Back in the days skateboard videos like Streets on Fire and Animal Chin showed a different side of skating, it was more about having fun with your crew and travelling together, and if you got footage cool, if you didn’t, cool. Super Jumbo Bolivia takes the traditional route, and goes a step further – this isn’t like the AntiHero vids where they went to South America and killed it, this is a documentary purely about skating in Bolivia.
Bolivia is one of the poorer countries in South America, with land mass 5 times larger than the UK, and a small population of around 9million, so its not surprising it took the Lovenskate cameras a week on their initial visit in 2002 to find a skater, but fully inspired, it wasn’t too long until a more in depth look in to the Bolivian skate scene was thoroughly investigated.

In 2007, after the successful birth of the Lovenskate brand, they went back to film an expose on skating in Bolivia as a whole, searching out skaters and spots from the Capital La Paz through to the jungles of the Santa Cruz region. The spots might not be on par with Barca, but the love of skateboarding more than makes up for that. With an estimated 900 skaters in the country, its easy to understand why the skate-industry hasn’t jumped to support the scene. The price of equipment here is really high, and getting a board is a mission in itself, but the hand-me-down culture is evidently thriving but there isn’t much product to go around with skaters resorting to travelling to America to get setup. (Remember that next time you choose to focus a deck)
The spots are fairly basic, and it makes you appreciate how spoilt we are in the UK. La Paz does have a park which is killed daily by the locals and travellers alike. There is some great footage from a travelling Chilean skater on holiday called Patrico, who highlights one of the problems skating in La Paz, being the worlds highest city, the altitudes thin air makes breathing hard and slows down a session. Still, faced with all these problems, the scene rolls on.
Santa Cruz is home to the Mmmta Crew, who cordially invite skaters from everywhere to come session, these guys will ride anything. The province again is a little spot starved, and again, doesn’t stop skaters from pushing themselves. The scene over there is young, and without the influence of a constant barrage of American skate vids they are clearly developing their own relaxed style of skating. It’s only a matter of time before someone comes out of Bolivia and blows people away, much in the way Burnquist did in the early 90s and later Rodrigo TX.

The DVD is fantastically edited with some great black and white stills laced in to the production, the thing that impresses me most is that Stu and Faye (who filmed it) stay pretty much behind the camera, I’ve seen them both skate and it would have been easy to do the “hey look at me I’m rad” routine but, far more humble, let the skaters and their sub-culture take the plaudits. This is truly an inspirational piece of work, and a solid reminder the skateboarding brotherhood is alive and well EVERYWHERE.

If you’re into metal, you should know this band, but if you are a metal-head and you don’t know who these guys are, you need to be slapped, given a dunce hat, be told to sit on a stall in the corner of the room and face the wall!
Municipal Waste are a Thrash/Hardcore/Punk rock band from Richmond, Virginia on the East Coast of America who mix of all your favourite 80’s thrash bands with a hint of punk. Ryan (Guitar) and Tony (Vocals) were both available for some words before their sold out show at The Underworld in London from their December tour around Ireland and England with Iron Lung.
So as it’s the last day of the tour over here in England, how’s it been for you?
Tony: Yeah the tour has been good. It was great to bring Iron Lung, we toured with them before, last summer.
What are Iron Lung like?
Ryan: They’re a two piece band. A drummer and guitar player.
Tony: What did DB say about them?
Ryan: They’re crack-head metal!
Haha!
Tony: Yeah that’s it….another guy said he’d never seen two people make such a racket!

What was up with that bongo picture on Myspace , where you two are playing the bongos?
Tony: Oohhh!!
Ryan: We did an encore in Washington D.C., a bongcore.
Bongcore?
Ryan: Yeah, It was me and Tony doing a rendition of our song “I want to Kill the President”, but we changed it to “I want to Chill with the President” and so we did a bongo version of it. Its only on Municipal Waste unplugged……..the new record..hehe!!
So how long have you guys been together in the band?
Tony: I’d say 7 but I think its 8 years
Ryan: It’ll be 8 in January so nearly over 8 years man.
What’s the weirdest show you’ve ever played?
Tony: Weirdest?…well we played a weird ass show the other night in Dudley, We played in the Big room and it sucked haha!
Why?!Tony: Because it was probably like a 2,000-3,000 capacity venue and only like 150 people showed up. So we were in this big room with not a lot of people, so we made everyone get up on stage while we played, we just had a stage full of people haha!
Ryan: Then Dave our drummer farted and everyone all cleared off.
…and what would you say is the worst?
Tony: We have a bunch of worst shows. We had one show in Germany which was really bad.
Ryan: Leipzig – Ahhh man, all our equipment fucked up.
Tony: Yeah, Leipzig! Usually when equipments gone wrong, it’s bad.
Tony: I had no voice, but they did this really cool confetti drop for us and it sucked!!
Ryan: HAHA!!…Yeah, it’s was like Anti-climatic, coz we’re playing shit and they’re “ahh celebrate!”
Tony: We havn’t really played a lot of shows where everyone just stands there and looks at us on stage like we’re assholes and that was one of the shows where everyone’s just standing there thinking “What the fuck are these guys doing?”
Ryan: They were giving us tips on how to fix our equipment or how to sound better.
Tony: haha! Yeah, it’s frustrating!
Your gigs are known to be quite rowdy – have you guys ever had any trouble with the 5-0?
Ryan: The cops? Yeah we tried to play house party’s and the Police shut it down, so we can’t even play in our home town anymore.
Tony: Oh man yeah, I remember one time we were at this show at a festival called Macrock in Harrisonburg, Virginia. And at the time there was this big controversy in the states going on with the Christians and there was this lady who was brain dead and they didn’t want her to be killed and it was right when the Pope died. And so they killed this lady….
Ryan: Do you know who her name is?
Tony: Her names Terri Schiavo….and yeah, one of our friends got up on stage and said this speech before we played…hehe!….and he said “Right now the Pope and Terri Shiavo are 69’ing in heaven!!” And this cop flipped out, he was so pissed off and this other cop was like, holding him back!
Ryan: Coz there was actual police at this show.
Tony: Yeah, they were fucking pissed off.
Why did he say that?!
Tony: Coz were just trying to piss people off.
Ryan: Freedom of speech man!

What do you guys think of England when you come over here and play, how is it different from the States?
Ryan: A lot of Beans and toast over here!
Heinz baked beans?
Ryan: Yeah and the beans taste just the same over here.
Tony: I think the crowds at home are more mixed. Theres a lot of punks and metal-heads and over here it seems its more of the metal scene. But metal’s so fucking big over here!
It’s all about the heart of Metal!
Oh yeah, really it is! But I think that’s the only real main difference.
I’ve got a rough idea to what the answer to this maybe, but what would you say is the best band you guys have ever toured with?
Tony: I think me and Ryan will both agree with Suicidal Tendencies.
Just as I thought….
Ryan: As far as being the most down to earth guys genuinely, their a great band to be on the road with. They were incredible everynight.
Tony: They gave us the place of being main support and it was like, they didn’t need to do that. They could have brought on a bigger band and they didn’t, they brought us and it when over fucking great.
Stoked!
Tony: Yeah it was real fucking cool man. I don’t know, we get along great with a lot of the bands we tour with. I mean we’re still great friends with Gwar and Toxic Holocaust…
I remember that picture of you in the toilet next to the dude from Gwar..hehe!
Tony: Oh yeah haha!
Ryan: It’s small!

Who would you guys say is the most irritating out of the whole band when your drunk?
Tony: Haha!!…Probably me
Why?! Hehe!
Ryan: He just turns into a baby…a big stinky baby with bad breath!
I remember about a year and a half ago when I first saw you guys, we were over at the Mean Fiddler on Tottenham Court Rd. I think Dave (drummer) was the only responsible person around whilst you guys were just completely out of it…
Ryan: Nah. Dave gets out of control sometimes!
Tony: Yeah man, when he gets drunk, he’s by far the most out of control!
Ryan: He beats up his girlfriend………….No I’m joking haha!
Thanks for that! OK let’s end this hell. You guys are currently working on the new album now, what’s the name of the album and when is it coming out?
Ryan: We don’t have a name for it yet, but in the late summer early August it should be out. So we will be back! Hell yeah!
We look forward to it! Thanks a lot for the words. Have a good show!
Ryan: Thanks
Tony: Appreciate it man!

It was 11am when we entered the park and met our worst nightmare – rain. Bay 66 skate park have never learned from this major problem across the 11 years the park has been in London as when it rains here and is wind assisted, one side of the park gets super damp and becomes unskateable. This was the only day that week the rains had come to London but it didn’t stop us and we had to keep our heads up.
The midi ramp was our main concern though as the extension was soaked. Our European guests from Emerica – Eniz Fazliov and Ricardo Fonseca were testament to the slip slide nightmare so it was a game of wait to see if this would dry out as our Ricta Mini Ramp Jam would have to be moved to the little mini instead.
The queue got smaller as the doors opened and within 30 minutes the park was awash with people flying everywhere. Some people on forums annually post that they may not come because it gets too busy but they forget this is a celebration, a gathering, staying at home fingering your board and watching a skate DVD instead as the rain pours on your windows is the lamest choice ever. This is all about bringing people together and only the best will attend. Luckily there was over 650 of the best here today and they kept coming.
With that in mind the unsponsored comps were underway with MC Mark Brewster on the mic ripping the piss out of anyone he could see. He was armed with Sidewalk Magazine subscriptions and Emerica shoe vouchers for the winners and by watching the standard of this years comp his work was fully cut out. The Spanish chap in the brown shirt laid down some hammers and took home his winnings alongside 6 others who carved out winning tricks.
As the rain fell the pro jam kicked in. It was carnage this year due to us not clearing the street course of rabid kids but it didn’t stop Blueprint’s Vaughan Baker from flipping the wall and knocking out tre flip fakies.
Darryl Dominguez knows this wall well as a local and his tre flip fakies blew the house down. He finally got his trick much to the delight of the crowd. It was massive!
Carl Wilson won the wallride comp in 2007 so his confidence was high as he managed to frontside ollie on vert over the quarter. Steak let his arse do the skating on the wall once again whilst Ben Raemers banished the cold with an ice plant, followed by an alley oop grab from the quarter into the wall finishing with Wilson’s winning Trick of 2007 – the nose blunt on the sidewall. It was sick and Raemers felt £100 better off for it.
The ledge pulled out some tasty tech skills too. Raemers got some fast salad whilst Wilson nose blunted the entire length. Jess Young and Adam Moss got amongst it and laid down a bunch of bangers on this ledge. Dylan Hughes and Matt Davies also got amongst it. Baker tre flip nose slid whilst Nicky Howells tried his best to knock out a perfect tailslide flip to fakie. He took the £100 but Danny Brady was getting warmed up and took his money on the brand new Altamont Block.

This year we were fortunate enough to be able to raise £1000 for best trick prizes and the same amount again to build this block. We left this again to Fos – remember The Whale back in 2006? This year he fancied something he had seen on a recent art trip to China so he brought back the plans for this jam and the builders did the rest.

We would like to say a big thank you to Pete King, Willis and Rodney Clarke at King Ramps for completing the build this block to perfection for us at super late notice. If you need to hire a mini ramp or build something bespoke, don’t go anywhere else.

The Altamont Block tested the best. Sean Smith came all the way from Milton Keynes to backside nose blunt slide the entire thing and came close. The boy skates at speed and is a pleasure to watch. Dan Cates nonchalantly attacked the coping from left to right leaving Danny Brady to sweep £200 in £50 notes with more tricks than the rest that included a fakie blunt and a frontside 180 fakie nosegrind to revert. Smashed it.
It was freezing but the rail comp always seems to warm the coldest every year. The session took off with Casper laying down the openers alongside Neil Smith who really does pack em. Sharpey threw in his double rail trouble, Boots and Adam Moss represented for Death and Mike Wright destroyed the place.
We asked many skaters on the day who their Skater of 2008 was and Mikey’s name came up time and time again. His 270′ on the rail was one of many to scream about but it was his blunt flip out that got the headlines. It’s not in our edit as one of our camera men was filming through gaffer tape and it was flamed but this was the trick of the day so far and Mikey took £100 back to Yorkshire hands down.
We had prepared a monster 6 ft wall for the midi ramp comp this year but due the weather the extension was dubious to say the least. The riders decided to skate the ramp anyway as 4 sheets were dry, but if you veered off the the side of the extension it was disastrous! An ice rink seemed safer but regardless the Ricta Mini Ramp Jam got underway and the hammers came out instantly.
It’s about the right time to state that when Marc Churchill arrived and viewed the wet ramp he was almost in tears. If there was an award for the most traveled skater in the UK and down for the cause, it would definitely be either him or Zorlac and you could see the anger in his eyes on entry, but it didn’t stop anything. Marc churned out feebles, smiths and a combination of gnar as the session rolled to the sounds of Iron Maiden. Rob Smith brought every combination of finger flip known to man, even at one point trying a sal flip nose blunt not seen for years. That even impressed Niall Neeson!

Ben Nordberg hucked out one of the best tricks of the day with a carefree bigspin backside lipslide that earned him £100.Jake Collings sneaked into the session for Kill City with consistency. His frontside stalefish to tail slaps, frontside flip grabs and flip stalefish’s on the mini were sick. He took an equal amount as the clock ticked down and this is where the fun started in the last 2 minutes. It’s like a football match at 1-1 where all of a sudden, you have to score. Trevor Johnson beat the clock by 2 seconds with a flip frontside blunt to assist a bag of tricks on the day such as backside boneless to fakie and switch fs grinds. Carl Wilson managed to get his flip backside lipslide in 5 seconds after the clock but Jake and Trevor took the loot.

The vert wall had to be sessioned so we split the loot on the 2 mini ramps. Best trick on this vert wall took £200 and it took seconds to get the place rocking. It was packed out on there with boards flying everywhere! A dreaded skater came close to getting his trucks over the coping but Joshua ‘Manhead’ Young was the only one in the end to defeat the beast on that front with a rock and roll. This then turned into the Ben Raemers show and he took the loot with a variety of tricks including a cheeky dogpisser, noseblunt on the side and a sick backside wallride 180 out.

Raemers left the park with £300 in his pocket and the Man of the Match Award and we all went home with smiles glued to our faces. Most people went home with free stuff and others with full blown flu as it was FREEZING!
Big thanks to all who attended this years event, Emerica, Altamont, Ricta, Death, Blueprint, Landscape , Heroin, Cliché, Kill City, The Gyppo Army, Jart, The Harmony, Plan B, DGK, Karma, Crayon, Science, Drawing Boards and Sidewalk Magazine. Also big thanks to all at Bay 66, Horsely, Alan Christensen, Fos, Moose, Claire Wilson. Andy Evans, Ryan Gray, Ben Powell, Brooks, Henry, Sam May and Matt Clarke.

We also have to thank all of you who supported our stance to dedicate this skate event to raising awareness of the problems of Knife Crime in the UK alongside the It Doesn’t Have To Happen campaign. You should know by now that if you carry a knife you are more likely to be stabbed yourself. Spread this message as too many people are getting hurt in the UK right now because of this mindless violence. It has to stop.

w/ Iron Lung
The Underworld,
London 11/12/08
Internet piracy is a great thing. With the increase of illegal downloads harming record sales, a lot of bands can only make a substantial wage from touring. With Christmas looming, everybody wants to take home a crust this festive season. The immediate effect of this is that loads of really decent bands from across the pond have packed up their gear and are going on full UK tours to snatch up your pennies before Santa arrives.
Leading the charge of this mass exodus of bands is the forever partying, Municipal Waste. A band more concerned with robbing your bottle of crimbo sherry than nicking your pennies. Having blown London apart so many times before, this city has almost become home turf to the Waste. The crowd is packed in tight at the Underworld and the fans, young and old, are chugging on their beers with nervous anticipation as they wait for the Virginia thrashers.
Seattle’s Iron Lung filled the support slot and Jesus-titty-fuckin-Christ they were good. A true assault on the senses from a duo that perform with such speed and venom. A perfect and surprisingly good band to get the rabid crowd going before Municipal Waste ignite the stage.
It only takes a couple of chords, played by axe man Ryan Waste, to send the lunatic crowd into a whirlwind frenzy. Opening as per usual with ‘Deathripper‘ the trademark beach inflatables loom over head as skinny punk after fat bastard metal-head begin to dive off the stage and rain down on the heads of the peeps in the pit. The Waste slam straight into ‘Sadistic Magician‘ and after that its nonstop chaos for the night. Municipal Waste churn out some of their best grooves from all 3 of their albums to a back drop of stage divers and beer fueled mayhem. ‘Unleash The Bastards‘, ‘Terror Shark‘ and ‘Blood Drive‘ all get an outing tonight with Tony Foresta (Vocals) barking orders at the crowd between tracks. Commanding everybody to “circle fuckin pit!” or “destroy the fucking place!” the crowd at the Underworld kindly oblige.
The night comes to a close with ‘Born To Party‘ and the inevitable “Municipal Waste are gona FUCK-YOU-UP!” chant from all the thrash elite in the pit. When you go and see a band like Municipal Waste it’s like being reunited with your family at Christmas. There are guys who you will always see there. Like the dude who always dresses up like the terror shark or that one guy who always throws up in the corner after way too much cider. Unfortunately, like most family reunions, after a couple of hours you get bored and want to leave. This ain’t my first Municipal Waste rodeo and I have a lot of time for the band and their music but I’ve seen it all before.
Municipal Waste dominate tonight with a show that has all the hallmarks of a great thrash gig but we get nothing new from their performance. Maybe a “detox” is in order before the Waste come at us again with something fresh, something new and something that will make us go utterly ape shit for these guys all over again.
