The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart

Ok, that name is quite a mouthful, and it does sound kinda pretentious. But seriously, put aside your preconceptions, because NYC’s The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart are well worth it. There’s a healthy indie-pop scene brewing in Brooklyn these days, and The Pains Of… are amongst the cream of the crop, sprinkling beautiful pop tunes over tidal waves of fuzzed-up guitars.

The band have never been shy to admit their fondness for UK indie heroes such as My Bloody Valentine and Teenage Fanclub, and whilst they aren’t really taking those influences anywhere new, it’s hard to argue with songs like ‘Everything With You‘, ‘This Love Is Fucking Right!‘ and ‘Come Saturday‘ (you can check the latter out on the link above). Swoonsome, melodic choruses? Check. Boy/girl vocals? Check. Sense of wistful yearning for something or someone that is just that little bit out of reach? Oh yes, and then some.

It’s early days for The Pains Of…, but with a debut album like this under their belts, it’s hard not to feel like they’re on to something potentially very special. In the meantime, summer is on its way, and whether you’re going to be spending those long sunny days in love or lovelorn, this is the perfect soundtrack.

They’ll be returning to UK shores for a bunch of shows in May:

Thu 14th – Brighton, Great Escape Festival
Sat 16th – London, Brixton Windmill
Sun 17th – Leicester, The Musician
Mon 18th – Wrexham, Central Station
Tue 19th – York, The Duchess
Wed 20th – Glasgow, Nice & Sleazy
Thu 21st – Leeds, Cockpit
Fri 22nd – Manchester, Chorlton Irish Centre
Sat 23rd – Bristol, Dot to Dot Festival
Sun 24th – Nottingham, Dot to Dot Festival

Check the website for additional UK dates in June.

Supersuckers/Nashville Pussy Live

London ULU
11/4/09

Rock n’ roll – is it a sound, or an attitude? The music itself may have evolved since its 1950s origins, but evolution has never been much of an issue for either of tonight’s headliners, both of whom seem eager to join the likes of the Ramones, Motorhead and AC/DC in the ‘great bands who essentially write the same record over and over again’ stakes. Still, at the same time, it seems wrong to intellectualise a genre that has always been about gut feeling, and neither the Supersuckers nor Nashville Pussy are pretending to be anything that they aren’t.

Dang, I’m a lucky man.” That’s what the look in Nashville Pussy frontman Blaine Cartwright’s eyes says as his wife/guitarist Ruyter Suys kneels at his feet, soloing away, her face the picture of ecstasy. The band’s Southern-fried odes to sex, drugs, drinking and fighting (and not much else) have led many to dismiss them as a cliché, but in the live setting, these guys and girls deliver in spades. Quite simply, there is no let-up in energy, with just about every song blasting past in a blaze of squalling riffs, powerhouse drumming Cartwright’s signature whisky-soaked rasp. They’re the Deep South bar band that outgrew their town, and as they rip through a cover of Ike & Tina Turner’s ‘Nutbush City Limits’, you can’t help but admire their chutzpah.

Supersuckers frontman Eddie Spaghetti has long referred to his band as “the greatest rock n’ roll band in the world”, and whilst that’s debatable, they’ve certainly made a case for being one of the greatest in their 20-year existence. Like their former tour buddies Social Distortion, the Supersuckers understand that rock n’ roll mixes well with country, and hence it’s a welcome surprise when Eddie breaks out his acoustic guitar for a few numbers. Elsewhere, the band’s usual high-octane treats still manage to whip the crowd into a pogoing, howling mass, with the ULU’s excellent sound and the lack of a stage barrier adding to the sense of intimacy.

You guys are too good for an encore!” declares Eddie, before the closing brace of “I Want The Drugs” and ‘Pretty Fucked Up” reassure us that when the Supersuckers are in town, there are few more enjoyable ways to spend a Saturday evening.

Koston leaves Lakai

Strange way to go but this is from the Lakai site today: Wish we could say this is a belated April Fool’s, but unfortunately that isn’t the case. As of today, Eric Koston will no longer be a part of Lakai Footwear. We have arrived at this decision mutually and believe it will ultimately create a better situation for all parties involved. We thank Eric for his contributions to Lakai over the last three years and wish him well wherever his path may lead.

Mile End skatepark to open

Gravity Skateparks have been very busy indeed. A new bowl at Zac’s old haunting ground in Wallington, Surrey has been built by their crew. Check Tweaker Blog for some pics. This weekend sees the opening of yet another concrete park for London, this time over East at Mile End.

Marc Churchill from Gravity says: “The skatepark is an open plan design with emphasis on space, flow and variety. The park has a few traditional elements along with a few quirky ones as well, like the ‘Diamond Block’and the steep bank into dish feature.”

It looks fun so get down there when it opens on Friday 10th of April. The Mile End skatepark is on the corner of Burdett Road and St Pauls Way, Mile End, London, E3. Click here for the Square One edit.

Vallely’s Revolution Mother sign record deal

Mike Vallely’s career had taken yet another road today as his band Revolution Mother has signed to Ferret Music.

Vallely says of the band’s sound “I think we really found our groove as a band with the last three or four songs we recorded on the last record and we found our groove live playing the Warped Tour (2007). At the end of the day we are a rock n roll band. We have hardcore, punk and metal influences but really we’re just playing overdriven blues.”

The album called aptly titled “ROLLIN’ WITH THA MUTHA” is out on July 6th.
