10 Tricks with Scott McNab
Need a jacket that makes you feel amazing? Look no further, but firstly, scroll down below and click play as you need the music to make this review work best.
Done that? OK here we go.
Volcom’s Oxford Jacket loved me and left me this month. She arrived in the post at the end of May and fit like a glove- tailored perfectly to make my appearance look smart for the first time in ages. It was exactly what I needed at the time. A jacket that could deal with the summer nights, light weight with pockets inside and out to deal with the usual electrical gadgets I ship around my stupid life daily.
I had fallen for her curves, I had fallen for the the punk rock inner lining and her abililty to make me feel like i was being noticed for the first time in a while. I was wearing her when I met a beautiful girl in the park one afternoon. She walked past a rose bush at the ice cream parlour to pat my lovely woofer on the head, then kissed his little nose and told me he was the most amazing dog she had ever met. I asked her if she wanted an ice cream but she was with friends. I guessed she was actually being polite and probably had boyfriend. She was stunning so there’s no way she could have been single. The next day I returned to the park for another walk. She was there again and alone this time so I bought her a drink and we exchanged numbers.
I lucked out. She was single, and thankfully we fell in love pretty quickly. After the first week I noticed that she adored my Oxford jacket. She would prune the bobbles that appeared on the elastic cuffs, she took it to the dry cleaners once every 2 weeks and used to wear it whenever it wasn’t on my back. We booked a holiday to Greece after dating for a month. My bag didn’t arrive at the airport so it was not the ideal welcome to another country but thankfully the jacket was there with us to meet the 42′ heat. She still looked good on the ferry though, hooked over my shoulder, enjoying every breeze that caught her 65% polyester and 35% cotton charcoal heather appearance. It was here that our love was torn apart. The jacket was unfortunately left on the boat. My mind has wandered. She is probably being worn by a Greek ferry worker as you read this. He is probably fingering the zip that I loved the most, fastening the buttons that joined the collar and warming his hands in he pockets I loved resting my hands in. It’s soul destroying and I never quite recovered from the loss.
My new girlfriend left me shortly after the jacket disappeared. Not even the dog could convince her to stay. She is probably back in Greece right now having a cold beer and some seafood with a local who looks amazing in his new Volcom threads, whilst i’m here pining for the best jacket I have ever owned. Purchase one of these today as it could change your life.
Witchcraft Skateboards Tour 2011 video
The start of the Witchcraft Skateboards tour at the beginning of this month saw the road crew consisting of French, Jake Snelling, Jamie Morley, Mark Tidbury and many friends hit up skateparks around the Herfordshire and Essex areas. With the plan to pick up more team riders and friends along the way, the first stop on the tour was Saffron Walden’s American built paradise. The sun was out, the concrete coping got rinsed and luckily no one was injured on the first day!
On day 2, the team riders met more friends at Hemel Hemstead’s Extreme Connexions park for session on their brand new coping and pool tiles. The sight of tube socks was ridiculous and even the familiar faces of Ben Raemers, Carl Wilson and Mark Munson were there to welcome the lads off the van.
Enjoy this footage put together by Bromley of these 2 packed days of skating on the road. Look out for the full tour video on Sidewalk Mag when it’s ready to roll soon and thanks to Terrathorn for the use of their music.
We love Kennington’s concrete hole. It’s been there for years, ripped by many and even stories of baseball bats and fighting locals back in the day never deterred anyone from visiting.
This week some fresh footage of a session featuring Tom Basi, Jake Harris and Sam Taylor has been posted online, watch it here and check out Taylor’s new website once you are done.
It’s only the beginning of August so there’s plenty of time left for a barbecue summer, however pessimistic we’re supposed to be about the weather. If you still want to make the most of the last few summer months and skate through the day without your legs reaching boiling point, purchasing a pair of shorts wouldn’t be a bad idea.
Coincidently, I happen to have a great pair of shorts on my body now. The Volcom Borken Skate Chino is a true skate chino. It’s not just a name! They are baggy enough (without looking ridiculous) to move about in comfortably and not too short. As expected from Volcom the quality is good with 35% cotton and 65% polyester so they shouldn’t rip too easily if you slam in them. There are also plenty of pockets with coin catchers so your small change doesn’t fall out, making the aforementioned slam worse. The famous Volcom Stone logo features on the inside and the drip brown colour looks choclately enough to eat, although they come in plenty of other colour ways too, including black.
If you need any more encouragement, Volcom have a bangin’ team with dozens of well known pros and ams which could do with you support. Get some air to your pegs or swelter…

The late 90’s Southsea skate video, Pigeon, is online for the first time. Filmed by Keith Martin and Paul Gonella in 1998 and January 1999, this scene video features Portsmouth and London spots, many of which are no more. The skating is of a really high standard and the video has a true DIY feel. Many of the songs used are by skaters (including Gorm and Paul Tambini) and the film itself was edited on two VCR’s at the Bored Skateshop.
So if you are or were a Southsea local, love 90’s skating or just want to see some great skating, this wouldn’t be a bad way to spend just over half an hour of your time. Get that kettle on.
St.Spirit live
Glasswerk night at The Old Queens Head
Islington, London
10th August 2011
It’s not often you hear tracks by unsigned bands that are so good that you find yourself traveling on the way up to North London, two days after riots have dominated the news. The destruction and terror that emerged this week is only a mile or so from the Old Kings Head in Islington but it did not deter St.Spirit from pulling their show here tonight unlike others out there.
This brand new band from Richmond are made up of five 19 yr olds, who have all schooled together and spent time in a spare room of their parents houses to record what you hear on the web today. The harmonies that each individual member brings to this band form a blanket of lush melodies that compliment lead singer, Myles McCabe’s vocals. In fact, they do it so well that the time and effort behind the scenes for all of this to click so perfectly could only come from dedicated planning to rehearse for such a performance. Everyone has a microphone, drummer and keyboard player included and they are spot on with their delivery.
Musically, this band are playing their own style of heartfelt indie. Every song is awash with intricate musical parts that build beautifully and fade to piano and pre made samples, revealing the imnpressive production levels of this band. Their heroes of My Bloody Valentine may be sonicly more powerful live but the likes of The Maccabies and Coldplay may be more of a starting point in terms of where this band are sat between sound wise. Throw in the swirling, heavyness of Radiohead and you are somewhere close to the mark.
Tonight’s most memorable song is Build A Fire, mainly due to the band’s wonderfully crafted, animated video that is currently attracting attention out there. it was edited by one of the band’s Brothers for fun and conjures up the artistic and thoughtful nature of their music, which only adds to the intrigue of this bands aspirations.
It may be their 7th gig ever, but St.Spirit proved tonight that they could probably be one of those bands that could potentially be headlining the Garage just up the road from here sometime in 2012. If that happens, they may just be that band that cause a riot of their own. Look out for them.
London based Science Skateboards are back with a new promo, a new range of decks, baseball shirts, tees and three new riders.
Dan Beall (who you are probabaly familiar with from his Fresh Blood last year) is a Sheffield based ripper who can and will nose bonk anything. Luka Pinto had one of the best parts in London scene vid, Getting By (albeit the questionable colourways) so expect him to go big now he’s properly hooked up. Last but not least, Albert Gesswein has plenty of tech ledge tricks to make your head spin. All three have tricks in the new promo amongst the rest of the team that you can watch below.
The new board graphics feature a healthy variety of artists so there is almost certainly a deck for you regardless of your taste. Moving on to the clothing, there’s are variations on graphics which have worked well on decks (either in the current or past range) so they are sure to fly off shelves.
They have a shiny new website and are being distributed in the UK by Rock Solid and now will go stateside with Permanent Distribution. Get in there and support them.
